There are only three Reds players, whose last name begins with the letter “E” who’ve played in the Postseason.  Who are they?

IDENTIFY THE BOBBLEHEADS AND WIN A VOTTO JERSEY!

How would you like to win a Joey Votto jersey?  Duh, of course you would!  Well here’s your chance…

Below are photos of the bobblehead/figurine collection on display in BOR HQ.  Your job is to correctly label the names of the bobbleheads/figurines according to their numbers and then email your answers to me (jramsey@reds.com) by Tuesday, October 18.  The person who gets the most right, wins first prize.

I will only accept answers via email.

First Prize: Joey Votto jersey – size large, an autographed Joey Votto bobblehead and a Better Off Red t-shirt.
Second Prize: An autographed Scott Rolen bobblehead and a Better Off Red t-shirt.
Third Prize: An autographed Edinson Volquez bobblehead and a Better Off Red t-shirt.

In the event of a tie, the hard-working folks at BOR will figure out a creative way to decide a winner.

Please note, I’m a stickler for spelling and specific identification.  Basically, I’m looking for proper names.  I’m also looking for names of the mascot bobbleheads.  For example, “Reds Mascot” will not suffice.

To get you started, there are two generic bobbleheads that really don’t have proper names.  We’ll call those the “Dodgers Bobblehead” (#2) and the “Cardinals Bobblehead” (#72).

Hint: No bobblehead/figurine appears more than once, however, there are different bobbleheads/figurines of the same people (for example, there are a few different Joe Nuxhall bobbles/figurines).

Good luck!

According to the 1987 Reds Media Guide, this man was the first baseball player ever to twice earn Big Ten conference MVP honors.  Who is this former Red?

TRIVIA FOR A SHIRT ANSWER/WINNER

From the 1978 Reds Media Guide….

Vida Rochelle Blue, Jr.: The presence of Vida Blue on the Cincinnati pitching staff adds another winner of the Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player Award.  The lefthanded Blue won them both in 1971 when he posted a 24-8 record for the Oakland A’s.

From the Redleg Journal…

The trade for Vida Blue came on December 9, 1977 when the Reds sent Dave Revering and $1,750,000 in cash to Oakland.  Seven weeks later, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn voided the Vida Blue trade, claiming there was too much money involved in the deal and that the sale of players would create competitive imbalance…Blue was eventually traded to San Francisco…Kuhn’s decision came too late for the Reds 1978 media guide however.  Blue appeared with a photograph that had the “C” on his cap airbrushed in and his mustache airbrushed out.

For correctly answering the question, @BennyCL has been randomly selected as this week’s winner.  He’ll receive a brand new Better Off Red, limited edition t-shirt and a mystery prize from BOR Headquarters.

Didn’t win?  Don’t fret, we’ll play again next week.

Expect good news

This former Most Valuable Player, Cy Young Award winner and six-time All-Star appears in the 1978 Reds Media Guide as a member of the team without ever officially being acquired by the Reds.  He would never play a game for Cincinnati.  Who is it?

TRIVIA FOR A SHIRT ANSWER/WINNER

From page 30 of the Reds’ 1971 Media Guide:

“One of Manager Sparky Anderson’s first moves when he was named skipper of the Reds was to name Rose as captain of the Big Red Machine.  He’s the first Reds captain since Billy Myers held a similar position in the mid-thirties.”

For correctly answering the question, @Tonester5 has been randomly selected as this week’s winner!

Didn’t win?  No worries, we’ll do it again next week.

Also – keep your eyes peeled to Better Off Red as we have another big contest coming up soon.

According to the 1971 Reds Media Guide, Pete Rose was the first Reds team captain since this man held the position in the “mid-thirties.”  Name him.

TRIVIA FOR A SHIRT ANSWER/WINNER & A TWEETUP-DATE

From the 1974 Reds Media Guide:

“Perez especially likes to hit at Wrigley Field in Chicago.  He hit three homers at Wrigley and has 19 lifetime in the Windy City.  ‘If I play here (Wrigley) all time, Babe Ruth’s records mean nothing,’ Tony jested last June after hitting two off Milt Pappas.  ‘I like this park.  I swing easy here.  Lot of guys know how wind carry ball out real easy, but they overswing and pop up.  I know if you hit ball good without swinging hard, it go out easily.’”

For correctly answering, @amyeditress has been randomly selected as this week’s winner.  She’ll get a brand new Better Off Red limited edition T-shirt and a pair of Magic Red Shoelaces (if I have any left)…I’m also going to throw in a copy of that very 1974 Reds Media Guide.

What, you didn’t win?  No worries, we’ll do it again next week.
