THE BURT AWARDS: FINAL WEEK WINNERS (#THEBURTS)

Five weeks ago, Better Off Red polls opened for the prestigious Cincinnati Reds end-of-the-season awards known as “The Burt Awards.” Every Monday since, a new collection of categories was unveiled for BOR readers to vote upon.  Over a month and 21,000 votes later, it’s now finally time to announce the winners of “The Burts“…

Today we will announce the winners of the Week Five categories.  For Week One results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Two results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Three results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Four results, CLICK HERE.

.

We kick off our final week of The Burt Awards with the results of the Best Nickname poll.  A year ago, The Toddfather swept the nation and took home the “Burt” with 37% of the vote.  Coincidentally, this year’s winner also netted 37% of the vote.

The winner, with 157 of the 428 total votes is…

Nickname

Second place: The Toddfather (28%)

.

Up next is Favorite Food at Great American Ball Park.  Of the 21 nominees, the winner tallied 58 of the 380 votes.

And the Burt Award goes to…

FavoriteFoodatGABP

Second place: Skyline Chili (14%)

Notes:  The popular Nacho Helmet held off Skyline by just 4 votes for the victory.  I guess no one likes Candy anymore.  It was the only nominee to not get a single vote.  Dentists everywhere, pat yourselves on the back.

.

The next category is Best Special Event of 2013.  This one wasn’t even close.  Of the 15 nominees, the winner collected over half of the 372 total votes.

And the winner is….

SpecialEvent

Second place: Opening Day (13%)

Notes:  Redsfest finished in third place, just 6 votes shy of Opening Day.

.

The next poll asked you Reds fans, “Who gets your vote for a 2014 Bobblehead?”  There were 14 random nominees for this one, but the winner looks very familiar.

With 99 of the 416 total votes, the winner is….

Bobblehead

Sam also won this category in 2013.  You folks are adamant about getting Mr. LeCure enshrined in porcelain, aren’t ya?

Second place: Sparky Anderson (14%)

Notes:  Jeff Brantley (eating a chicken leg) held off Charlie Sheen for third place.

.

The Reds 16 sellouts in 2013 were a franchise record and the season attendance of 2,492,059 was a Great American Ball Park record.  But where is it that you all most enjoyed sitting at the ol’ ball game (or standing)?  That’s what our next poll asked – What is Your Favorite Section at GABP?

Twenty-one nominees amassed 359 votes.  The winner with 99 votes is…

?????????????????????????????????

Second place: Infield Box (7%)

Notes:  This is a PERFECT time to remind you that you can now place a deposit for 2014 Reds Season Tickets!  See what all this fuss about the Sun/Moon Deck is by sitting in that section next season!  CLICK HERE for details.

.

Now, back to regularly-scheduled programming…our next category is Favorite Game-Time Start.  Ten candidates (all Cincinnati time) combined for 330 votes.

When’s the best time to watch a Reds game?  You said….

GameTimeStart

Second place: 4:05pm (11%)

Notes:  No one likes 9:40pm…it didn’t get one measly vote.

.

The next category, Reds Player with the Best Music, could’ve simply been called ‘Sinatra vs. Paint it Black.’  Every single Reds player to appear on the 2013 roster was eligible for this award, but only 2 ended up with a real chance to win – Frazier and Votto.

The winner with 87 of the 350 votes is….

PlayerWithBestMusic

Second place: Joey Votto (21%)

Notes: Frazier beat Votto by 15 votes.  I was delighted to see Mike Leake, who used an “XX” song in 2013, get 7 votes.  Seven more than I would’ve thought (sadly).

.

And it’s now time for our final category of 2013 – Favorite Place to Go Following a Reds Game.  Thirty nominees collected a combined 378 votes.

The winner, with 103 votes is…

FavoritePlacetoGo

The Holy Grail Tavern & Grille is literally right across the street from the ballpark.  It’s close proximity and friendly staff are probably what propelled it to victory.

Second place: Home (26%)

Notes: There were 15 “other” votes.  Skyline Chili (29 votes) held off Christian Moerlein Lager House (25 votes) for third place.

.

Well, that concludes the 2013 Burt Awards!  I hope you had as much fun with this as I did.  I can’t believe this was the third year of The Burts.  Where has the time gone?!

You better believe we’ll be back next season, hopefully recovering from a World Series celebration!

Before we sign off, I must thank all of you who voted on the polls and participated in the discussion/fun.  You folks are the reason we do this.  Thank you!

And congratulations to all of the prize winners this week!  Including, “mac,” an active participant in the Burt Awards discussion.  For her efforts, she has been randomly selected as this week’s final winner and will receive a cool prize pack from BOR HQ.

That’s all for now.  Have a great weekend!!

Go Reds!

Expect Good News,

Jamie

THE BURT AWARDS: WEEK FOUR WINNERS (#THEBURTS)

Five weeks ago, Better Off Red polls opened for the prestigious Cincinnati Reds end-of-the-season awards known as “The Burt Awards.” Every Monday since, a new collection of categories was unveiled for BOR readers to vote upon.  Over a month and 21,000 votes later, it’s now finally time to announce the winners of “The Burts“…

Today we will announce the winners of the Week Four categories.  For Week One results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Two results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Three results, CLICK HERE.

Envelopes please…

.

We begin Week Four’s results with Favorite Game.  Last year, Homer Bailey sewed up this category by throwing a no-hitter.

Who would’ve guessed that Bailey would throw another “no-no” in 2013?  But has the no-hitter “novelty” worn off for voters?

Nine candidates combined for 421 votes.

And the Burt Award for Favorite Game goes to…

FavoriteGame

Bailey’s no-hitter collected 216 votes, accounting for over half of the total results.  This is a solid indication that Reds fans respect the accomplishment of a no-hitter, no matter how often it may occur.

Second place: May 7 vs. Atlanta: Mesoraco and Choo hit back-to-back homers off Kimbrel for walkoff win (17%)

Notes:  The photo took longer to create than it did for Homer to throw the no-hitter.

.

Up next is Best Twitter Account.  Reds fans have a major presence on the social media scene, particularly Twitter.  Without those online fans, Joey Votto wouldn’t be the “Face of MLB,” and all of that #Whiff money would be in Los Angeles right now.

But of all the Reds Twitter accounts, which one resonates most with the fans?  Probably the uber-popular @DatDudeBP account, right?  After all, he’s the defending champion in this category.

Well, you may (or may not) be surprised.  The winner, with 198 of the 549 votes is…

Twitter

Reds Digital Media Director @LisaBraun overcomes the odds to win the Burt Award!

Lisa doesn’t have the most followers of the 24 nominees but she does have a knack for online interaction.  She’s accessible, friendly and knowledgeable and allows Reds fans that follow her, a place to comment, vent and/or ask questions.  She’s also known to have some fun from time-to-time.  Upon further review, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that her loyal legion of supporters helped propel her to victory – after all, they did the same for the Face of MLB and #Whiff contests.

Second place: @DatDudeBP (19%)

.

Our next category is “Grittiest.”  Ryan Hanigan is the two-time defending champ and was nominated again this year.  Can he make it three in-a-row?

Of the nine nominees, the winner with 78 of the 374 votes is…

Grittiest

Three straight for Ryan!

Second place: Homer Bailey (16%)

Notes:  This was probably the most balanced of the Burt results.  The votes were spread out fairly among seven of the nine candidates.  Bailey took second with 60 votes, just 4 more than third place finisher Shin-Soo Choo and 8 more than Sam LeCure.

.

One of my personal favorite categories is next – Player You Best Not Mess With.

Jonny Gomes, the inspiration of this poll, was the inaugural winner in 2011.  Mat Latos won it last year and is nominated again this year.  Will he repeat?

Six candidates amassed 431 votes.

The winner, with 210 votes is….

BestNotMessWith

I’ve heard it described more than once that Latos is a “beast” on the mound.  If you watch games in which he’s pitching, Mat can look pretty ferocious, so it’s no surprise he wins this category again in 2013.

Second place: Corky Miller (18%)

Notes:  I would have to think Jonathan Broxton’s injury this year took away from his vote total.  He finished with 15% and probably would’ve gotten my support if I were eligible to vote.

.

Our final category of the day is Performance of the Year and is normally reserved for Homer Bailey no-hitters (2012 winner).

But just to make sure, let’s reveal the winner anyway…..

Performanceofyear

Another season, another Bailey no-hitter.  Of the 10 candidates, the winner received 230 of the 454 total votes.

Second place: Jay Bruce, the only player in the Majors with at least 43 doubles, 30 HR and 109 RBI (13%)

Notes:  The 2014 awards for “Favorite Game” and “Performance of the Year” hinges on when (not if) Homer throws his third no-hitter.

.

That’s all for today.  Please tune in Friday for the grand finale as we announce the winners for Best Nickname, Favorite Food at GABP, Best Special Event of 2013, Your Vote for 2014 Bobblehead, Favorite Section at GABP, Favorite Game-Time Start, Reds Player with the Best Music in 2013 and Favorite Place to Go Following a Reds Game.

In addition to the victors above, there is one more winner to announce:

Congratulations to “shermanridges,” an active participant in the Burt Awards discussion. For his efforts, Sherman’s been randomly selected as a winner of a cool prize from BOR HQ.

I’ll be awarding a new winner tomorrow, so feel free to get noticed by either leaving a comment on the blog or by including the hashtag #TheBurts in your tweets.

Expect good news,

Jamie

THE BURT AWARDS: WEEK THREE WINNERS (#THEBURTS)

Five weeks ago, Better Off Red polls opened for the prestigious Cincinnati Reds end-of-the-season awards known as “The Burt Awards.” Every Monday since, a new collection of categories was unveiled for BOR readers to vote upon.  Over a month and 21,000 votes later, it’s now finally time to announce the winners of “The Burts“…

Today we will announce the winners of the Week Three categories.  For Week One results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Two results, CLICK HERE.

Envelopes please…

.

We begin today with Best Fielder.  This one was decided not too long after the polls opened.  The winner received 324 of the 602 total votes.

The Burt Award for Best Fielder goes to…

Best Fielder

Brandon has now made history as the only three-time winner in two separate Burt Awards categories.  In addition to “Best Fielder,” he has won the “Burt” all three years in the “Player You Most Enjoy Watching” category.

Second place: Jay Bruce (31%)

.

Our next poll is also a Burt Awards original category – “Great Red Hope.”  Voters feel that this poll’s winner carries “the most hope” into the 2014 season.  Six candidates amassed 586 votes.

Your winner, with 255 votes is….

Hope

With just 13 big league games under his belt, Billy Hamilton has now won three Burt Awards!  Impressive.

Second place: Johnny Cueto – Rebound from Injury-Plagued 2013 (18%)

Notes:  I was a bit surprised that the “Free Agent Signing or Player Via Trade” nominee received only 12% of the vote.

.

Up next is Best In-Game Feature at Great American Ball Park.  There were 13 nominees in this category, collecting a combined 519 votes.

The winner, with 213 votes is…

In-GameFeature

No surprise here.  This promotion received a lot of media exposure, and let’s face it, people love free pizza.

The winner couldn’t be here to accept its award, but on its behalf – I’d like to thank Reds pitchers, opponents’ batters and hungry Reds fans everywhere.

Second place: Powerstacks Flames Following a Reds Pitcher Strikeout (14%)

Notes:  Although the Scoreboard Stumper nominee was a late addition to the poll, it still didn’t collect a single vote!  Very disappointing.  If I was eligible to vote, I would’ve gone with it.  Keep your head up, Scoreboard Stumper.  I still love you.

.

Our next category is Best Mascot.  You know the usual suspects – Mr. Redlegs, Gapper, Rosie Red and Mr. Red.  The two-time winner in this category is Mr. Redlegs.  Can he make it three straight?

And the winner, with 201 of the 502 total votes is….

BestMascot

When polls opened last month, Mr. Redlegs told Mascot Illustrated that, if he were to win again this year, he would get a tattoo of Pete Rose.  So where’s it gonna be, Redlegs?

Second place: Mr. Red (21%)

Notes: Rosie Red finished in third place, just 3 votes shy of Mr. Red.

.

Our final category of the day is Best Facial Hair.  This one wasn’t as close as many of us here at BOR HQ thought it’d be.  The five worthy woolly nominees combined for 596 votes.

The winner, with 51% of the vote (306 votes) is…

FacialHair

Second place: Sam LeCure (40%)

Notes:  It was clear from the start that this category belonged to Corky and Sam.  However, it was nice to see all five nominees receive votes.  Here’s hoping J.J.’s beard continues to grow in size and popularity.

…..

That’s all for today.  Please tune in Thursday as we announce the winners for Favorite Game, Best Twitter Account, “Grittiest”, Player You Best Not Mess With and Performance of the Year.

In addition to the victors above, there is one more winner to announce:

Congratulations to @lish0803, an active participant in the Burt Awards discussion. For her efforts, Alicia’s been selected as a random winner of a cool prize from BOR HQ.

I’ll be awarding a new winner each day this week, so feel free to get noticed by either leaving a comment on the blog or by including the hashtag #TheBurts in your tweets.

Expect good news,

Jamie

THE BURT AWARDS: WEEK TWO WINNERS (#THEBURTS)

Five weeks ago, Better Off Red polls opened for the prestigious Cincinnati Reds end-of-the-season awards known as “The Burt Awards.” Every Monday since, a new collection of categories was unveiled for BOR readers to vote upon.  Over a month and 21,000 votes later, it’s now finally time to announce the winners of “The Burts“…

Today we will announce the winners of the Week Two categories.  For Week One results, CLICK HERE.

Envelopes please….

.

We begin today with Most Outstanding Pitcher.  The five candidates netted a combined  1,350 votes.

Your winner with 612 votes is….

MostOutstandingPitcher

Latos went 14-7 with a sterling 3.16 ERA in 32 starts for the Reds in 2013.  He ranked among National League leaders in wins (T10th), innings pitched (210.2, 7th) and winning percentage (.667, T5th).  His 14 victories tied a career high.

Second place: Homer Bailey (39%)

Notes:  Latos was the clear-cut winner but Bailey made a very strong late push in the poll.

.

Our next category is Best Hair.  The eight nominees included past winners Sam LeCure and Bronson Arroyo.  Overall, 923 votes were cast for this award.

The winner with 371 votes is…

BestHair

Arroyo is now a back-to-back winner in this category.

Second place: Jay Bruce (19%)

.

Up next is “Player You Most Enjoy Watching.”  There were 12 candidates this year, totaling 1,047 votes.

Your winner, with 328 votes is…

watching

Brandon Phillips joins Marty Brennaman (Best Announcer) as the only three-time winners in their respective categories.

Second place: Billy Hamilton (16%)

Notes:  I was kind of surprised to see Hamilton finish second, considering he only played in 13 games.  Reds fans obviously have high hopes for this young man and are excited for what he brings to the table.

.

And speaking of Billy….

There were 10 nominees for the category of Super Sub.  A total of 916 votes were cast.

The winner with 340 votes is….

SuperSub

Second place: Devin Mesoraco (17%)

Notes:  The exclusion of Tony Cingrani in this pool of nominees was a significant oversight on my part.  For this mistake, I’ve punished myself with 48 straight hours of Miley Cyrus music.

.

A total of 1,025 votes were cast for our next category – Best Swing.  Of the five candidates, this one became a two-man race.

The winner with 415 votes is…

BestSwing

Second place:  Joey Votto (33%)

Notes: Votto had a commanding lead going into the final week of voting.  Bruce fans cranked it up over the final few days to push Jay to victory.  I had actually completed the Votto “victory” photo for this category; that photo is now in an unknown third-world country with all of those St. Louis Cardinals 2013 World Series Champs t-shirts.

.

Our final result of the day was a hot-button topic among Reds fans.

During the seventh-inning stretch at Great American Ball Park, the 1967 hit song “Cincinnati, Ohio” by Connie Smith is played throughout the stadium.  Many love the song; many don’t.  It became a point of debate among those attending Reds games, reaching “Skyline vs. Gold Star” proportions.  Naturally, we put it to a poll.

466 of the 886 votes determined the result…

?????????????????????????????????

Notes:  I agree with the majority on this one.  I like the song and I like that it’s played during Reds games.  Many teams play silly or folksy songs during games that are identified with their city or state, so this isn’t unusual.  The Reds experimented with “Hang on Sloopy” a few years ago, and as much as I appreciated the effort, that song will always belong to Columbus and Cleveland.  “Cincinnati, Ohio” is ours.  Corny?  Sure.  Fun?  Why not.  Go with it.  Plus, Connie Smith is awesome.  My only complaint is that the song’s video is painful and nearly unwatchable.

.

That’s all for today.  Please tune in Wednesday as we announce the winners for Best Fielder, “Great Red Hope for 2014,” Best In-Game Feature at GABP, Best Mascot and Best Facial Hair.

In addition to the victors above, there is one more winner to announce:

Congratulations to @frankrva, an active participant in the Burt Awards discussion. For his efforts, Frank’s been selected as a random winner of a cool prize from BOR HQ.

I’ll be awarding a new winner each day this week, so feel free to get noticed by either leaving a comment on the blog or by including the hashtag #TheBurts in your tweets.

Expect good news,

Jamie

THE BURT AWARDS: WINNERS OF WEEK ONE ANNOUNCED (#THEBURTS)

Five weeks ago, Better Off Red polls opened for the prestigious Cincinnati Reds end-of-the-season awards known as “The Burt Awards.”  Every Monday since, a new collection of categories was unveiled for BOR readers to vote upon.

Over a month and 21,000 votes later, it’s now finally time to announce the winners of “The Burts“…

Today we will announce the winners of the Week One categories.

Without further ado…

…..

Our first category is Most Valuable Player.  This was the most active poll, with Reds fans casting 1,657 votes.

The winner, by just 62 votes is….

?????????????????????????????????

Choo batted .285 with 21 home runs, 54 RBI, 20 steals and a whopping .423 on-base percentage.  The 2013 season marked a season of firsts for Choo; a new team, a new position (center field), a new spot in the batting order (leadoff) and career highs in runs scored (107), walks (112) and OBP.  He also led the National League in hit by pitches (26).  Congratulations to Shin-Soo Choo, the 2013 Burt Award Winner for MVP!

Second place: Jay Bruce (32%)

Notes:  Joey Votto edged Brandon Phillips for third place by just one single vote (246-245).

…..

Our next category is Best Baserunner.  This one wasn’t even close.  First-place collected 1,092 of the 1,364 votes.

Your winner is…

Baserunner

In just 13 games, Hamilton made quite an impact – stealing 13 bases in 14 attempts.  He also scored 9 runs while driving opposing pitchers and catchers crazy.

Second place: Shin-Soo Choo (12%)

…..

Next is Best Newbie.  This one was another “no contest” as 82% of the 1,385 votes favored the winner.

Envelope please….

Newbie

Second place: Billy Hamilton (12%)

Notes:  It was nice to see Manny Parra get well-deserved votes.  He had a great bounce-back season in his first year with the Reds.

…..

Up next is Best Announcer.  Of the 11 nominees, the winner amassed 515 of the 1,395 votes.

Congratulations to our first 3-time winner….

BestAnnouncer

“Mercury” Marty Brennaman has swept this category in each of the first three years of The Burt Awards.  I’m sure he’s somewhere right now celebrating this incredible honor.

Second place: Jeff Brantley (16%)

Notes: To give you an idea of how popular Sean Casey remains among Reds fans, he finished in third place with 183 votes (13%).  The battle for fourth place was a good one as Reds PA announcer Joe Zerhusen (109) beat out Jim Day (105) and Chris Welsh (102).

…..

Our final category of the day is Best GABP Promotional Giveaway.  Nearly 1,300 votes were cast for the 26 nominees.  First-place accumulated 207 votes.

The winner, for the second year-in-a-row is…

stein

You people love your drinking apparatuses.

Second place: Mat Latos bobblehead (172 votes)

Notes: The Joe Morgan t-shirt finished in third-place, just 2 votes behind the Latos bobblehead.  Every one of the 26 nominees received at least 1 vote.

…..

That’s all for today.  Please tune in Tuesday as we announce the winners for Most Outstanding Pitcher, Best Hair, Player You Most Enjoy Watching, Super Sub and Best Swing.  We’ll also reveal the results of the Cincinnati, Ohio song poll.

In addition to the victors above, there is one more winner to announce:

Congratulations to “vanessa,” an active participant in the Burt Awards discussion.  For for her efforts, she’s been selected as a random winner of a cool prize from BOR HQ.

I’ll be awarding a new winner each day this week, so feel free to get noticed by either leaving a comment on the blog or by including the hashtag #TheBurts in your tweets.

Expect good news,

Jamie

  • Polls will close at Midnight, November 10.
  • Results will be posted right here on BOR on Monday, November 11.

As many of you already know, Better Off Red has announced a random “Fan Participation” winner during each week of Burt Awards voting.  Week Four’s Fan Participation winner is GSpitler.  G will receive a really cool prize from BOR Headquarters.

Would you like to be Week Five’s winner?   It’s your last chance, and since this is the final week, I’m going to award two winners – one from Twitter and one who comments on this blog.

  • To be Week Five’s Twitter winner, simply include the hashtag #TheBurts in your tweets this week.
  • To be Week Five’s Blog winner, simply leave a comment to THIS blog entry below.

I will announce the two random winners on Monday when the voting results are revealed for the 2013 Burt Awards.

Without further ado, here are the final categories that need your votes…

Leading off the final week of voting is “Best Nickname.”  In a day-and-age when most players’ nicknames have been reduced to simply adding a “y” or “ie” to their surnames, the Reds and their fans still manage to come up with some catchy monikers.  Which is your favorite?   Last year, “The Toddfather” took home the Burt with 37% of the vote.  Frazier is nominated twice this year.

.

Next up is Favorite Food at GABP.  Whenever you go to Great American Ball Park, there’s that one delicious item that you can’t watch the game without. What is it at GABP that makes your belly growl and your tongue slap your eyeballs?  And if the menu we listed doesn’t suit ya, click “other” and write in your vote in the comments section of this post.  The winner last year, with 20% of the vote was the good ol’ fashioned hot dog.

.

Our next category is “Best Special Event of 2013.”  It was a busy year for our Reds staff, especially the Entertainment and Productions and Promotional Events departments.  Several really cool Reds events took place in 2013.  Which was your favorite?  Last year, the “Shave Marty” event won with 34% of the vote.

.

We know how much you folks love your bobbleheads, so pay attention to this next category.  Of the nominees listed below, which would you like to see made into a bobblehead in 2014?  And please note, this is just for our amusement and there are no promises that the “winner” will get a bobblehead next year.

.

The next category is new to The Burts this year – “Favorite Section at Great American Ball Park.”  Where is that you like to sit or hang out at beautiful GABP when you come to a Reds game?

.

Another new category this year is “Favorite Game Time Start.”  Late afternoon, early evening, west coast, business day special?  Ideally, what is your favorite time to watch a Reds game?

.

Easily, one of the most popular blog posts here on Better Off Red involves Reds “At-Bat Music.”  Which Reds player had the Best Music in 2013?  If you need a point of reference, Click HERE to scroll through all the 2013 music updates.

.

Finally, the last category of the 2013 Burt Awards is – Favorite Place to Go After a Reds Game.  Where is that you like to celebrate a Reds victory (or on a rare occasion, mourn a defeat)?

.

Well, that about does ‘er.  All of the nominees for the 2013 Burt Awards have officially been announced.  It’s up to you to decide the winners!

Thanks for participating!

Expect good news,

Jamie

Without further ado, here are the new categories that need your votes…

……

Of the 162 games that the Reds played in 2013, there were a few that stood out above the rest.  Which game was your favorite?

.

The Reds Twitter roster continued to grow in 2013.  Reds fans now have online access to many of their favorite players and team personnel. Who was your favorite of the bunch in ’13?  Last year, you chose @DatDudeBP (37%).

.

This category is for the Reds fan who loves seeing dirty uniforms, full-throttle hustle and fearless acts of accomplishment.  Who was the “grittiest” Red of 2013?  Last year, Ryan Hanigan won the Burt with 46% of the vote.

.

You and your pals are sitting around discussing the possibility of the Reds getting into an on-field brawl.  Naturally, such a discussion requires the following question: Which Reds player should you best not mess with?  Last year, you said Mat Latos (35%)

.

There were several incredible performances by Reds players in 2013.  Which was the best?  Last year, Homer Bailey’s no-hitter took the title with 60% of the vote.  Go figure, another Homer no-hitter is a nominee this year.

…..

That’s all for this week.  Check back Monday for another round of categories and nominees.   Thanks for voting and don’t forget to take the discussion to Twitter by using the hashtag #TheBurts and/or leaving your thoughts in the comments section of this post!

THE BURT AWARDS – WEEK THREE: VOTE FOR #THEBURTS!

Welcome to Week Three of The Burt Awards!

  • Every Monday, through November 4, a new batch of categories will be unveiled for voting.
  • Polls will close at Midnight, November 10.
  • Results will be posted right here on BOR on Monday, November 11.

Before we get to this week’s polls, don’t forget to vote for Week One and Week Two nominees.

Congratulations to Week Two winner – Kathi!  She participated in the #TheBurts discussion and was randomly chosen to win a cool prize from BOR HQ.

Would you like to be Week Three’s winner?  Simply participate in the discussion by leaving a comment on the this blog post and/or by including the hashtag #TheBurts in your tweets this week.  I will announce one random winner prior to the unveiling of next week’s nominees.

Without further ado, here are the new categories that need your votes….

Our first category this week is Best Fielder.  Brandon Phillips is the perennial favorite in this category, but don’t forget about Jay Bruce, who once again had a tremendous year in right field.  Bronson Arroyo, Zack Cozart and Ryan Hanigan are also very worthy of this Burt Award.  “Dat Dude” won it last year with a remarkable 73% of the final vote.

.

Next is “Great Red Hope for 2014.”  This one is very much open for interpretation.  There are several random nominees for this category; some are coming off injury, some are blue-chip prospects that might help the club next season, and one nominee remains nameless/faceless.  It’s up to you to decide which carries the most “hope” into 2014.   Last year, Todd Frazier took home the Burt with 42% of the vote.

.

Our next category of Week Three is “Best In-Game Feature at Great American Ball Park.”  The Reds production/scoreboard team is second-to-none and always provides top-flight entertainment during Reds home games.  But which is your favorite?  Last year it was Free Pizza with 28% of the vote.

.

Next this week is “Best Mascot.”  You already know the usual suspects.  Last year, Mr. Redlegs became a 2-time champion in this category after winning 35% of the vote.  Will he make it three-in-a-row?

.

Our final category of Week Three could turn out to be the most hotly contested – “Best Facial Hair.”  It’s no surprise that Corky and Sam headline this one, but don’t forget about JJ’s grizzly bear(d) and Cueto‘s artistic whisker carvings.  Oh and are you looking for a late sleeper?  Look no further than Logan Ondrusek who began rocking a western-style moustache/chin patch in ’13.  This one is going to be close.

……

And that’s all for Week Three.  Thanks for voting and don’t forget to take the discussion to Twitter by using the hashtag #TheBurts and/or leaving your thoughts in the comments section of this post!

More categories next week!

THE BURT AWARDS – WEEK TWO: VOTE FOR #THEBURTS!

Welcome to Week Two of The Burt Awards!

Every Monday, through November 4, a new batch of categories will be unveiled for voting.  Polls will close at Midnight, November 10. Results will be posted right here on BOR on Monday, November 11.

Before we get to this week’s categories, don’t forget to vote for Week One’s nominees.

And speaking of Week One – congratulations to @nesi66, who, for talking up The Burts, wins a special prize from Better Off Red Headquarters!

Would you like to be Week Two’s winner?  Simply participate in the discussion by leaving a comment on this blog post and/or by including the hashtag #TheBurts in your tweets this week.  I will announce one random winner prior to the unveiling of next week’s nominees.

Without further ado, here are the new categories that need your votes…

Our first category for Week Two is Most Outstanding Pitcher.  It was another successful season for Bryan Price’s pitching staff and the five nominees for this award are all worthy of winning.  Who will you vote for?  Johnny Cueto was last year’s winner with 51% of the vote but due to the time he spent on the DL, he is not a nominee this year.

.

Who had the Best Hair on the team in 2013?  Last year, 38% of you picked Bronson Arroyo.  Will he repeat?  Remember this category is for best hair and shouldn’t be confused with Best Facial Hair (a category that will be unveiled in the coming weeks).

.

As long as Brandon Phillips plays for Cincinnati, I have no doubt he will be a nominee for this next category – Player You Most Enjoy Watching.  @DatDudeBP took home the hardware last year with 52% of the vote.  He has some stiff competition this year as the pool of nominees was expanded to a whopping 12 players.

.

Every baseball manager will tell you that it’s very important to have a good bench.  There are many crucial situations during the season and during individual games that call for a Super Sub.  Who was the best in this category for the Reds in 2013?  Last year, it was Todd Frazier (80%).

.

Whether it’s a beautiful smooth swing from the left side or an unorthodox (yet effective) hack from the right – handling the bat can be a work of art.  Who had the Best Swing in 2013?  Last year, you voted for Joey Votto (53%).

.

BONUS POLL:  Many teams in Major League Baseball have “their song” that they traditionally play in their home ballpark.  The Rangers and Astros play “Deep in the Heart of Texas.”  The Red Sox have “Sweet Caroline” and the Yankees play “New York, New York.”  In 2013, the Reds began playing a song during the seventh-inning stretch called “Cincinnati, Ohio” by Connie Smith.  What did you think?

.

That’s it for Week Two!  Thanks for voting, and don’t forget to take the discussion to Twitter by using the hashtag #TheBurts and/or leaving your thoughts in the comments section of this post!

POLLS HAVE OPENED FOR THE 2013 BURT AWARDS!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Reds fans of all ages! ………….

It’s time to vote for the third annual Burt Awards…or as we at BOR Headquarters like to call it – “The Burts.”

The Burts – named after Better Off Red mascot Burt BobbleRed – are fans choice awards recognizing the accomplishments and quirks that contributed to a memorable season for the 2013 Reds.

In addition to the traditional categories (MVP, Best Pitcher, etc), we also have some unconventional awards to hand out, such as “Best Mascot,” “Favorite Game” and “Best Hair.

Beginning every Monday, through November 4, a new batch of categories will be unveiled for voting.  Polls will close at Midnight, November 10.  Results will be posted right here on BOR on Monday, November 11.

The nominees for each category were determined by the hard-working staff at Better Off Red and members of the Cincinnati Reds front office.  We tried to limit the number of nominees to 5 per category, but as you’ll see, in some instances, we had to include more than 5.

You can vote as much and as often as you’d like.  If you lose track of the polls/nominees, the Burt Awards blog posts are listed under the “Categories” section, which is located on the sidebar of Better Off Red. –>>

*****As an added bonus, prizes will be randomly given to voters discussing the Burt Awards in the “Comments” section of each blog post, as well as to folks who Tweet about the Burts using the hashtag #TheBurts.  (Again, prizes will be awarded at random).

So without further ado, the first 5 polls are open!

.

Our first category is 2013 Reds Most Valuable Player.  We limited the nominees to position players since we’ll also have a 2013 Reds Most Valuable Pitcher category.  Last year, Brandon Phillips took home the “Burt” with 32% of the vote.

.

This poll is for the Best Reds Baserunner.  Keep in mind, sometimes the best baserunner isn’t always the fastest.  Last year, Drew Stubbs won this category with 54% of the vote.

.

Next is Best Newbie.  Nominees were based on “rookie” status as well as “newcomer” status to the Reds club.  Last year, Todd Frazier won with 45% of the vote.

.

This poll is for Best Announcer.  “Mercury” Marty Brennaman is going for his third consecutive Burt Award in this category.  Can he do it?

.

The final category for Day One voting is Best GABP Promotional Giveaway.  There were lots to choose from in 2013, so cast your vote wisely.  Last year the Reds Stein won by just 4 votes; it’s a nominee again this year.
