#THEBURTS WEEK FOUR RESULTS ANNOUNCED!

Last month, Better Off Red polls opened for the prestigious Cincinnati Reds end-of-the-season awards known as “The Burt Awards.” Every week since, a new collection of categories was unveiled for BOR readers to vote upon.  Five categories were trimmed from the Burt Awards in 2014, but the total number of votes was nearly identical to 2013.  Approximately 20,000 overall votes were cast for 25 categories.

Our first winner today is from the category Favorite Game of 2014.  The winner with 26% of the 355 total votes is…

Favorite Game

The final two games of the season were my personal favorites, as well.  Johnny Cueto winning his 20th game was definitely a great way to put a bow on the long year.  The Reds finished strong; let’s hope it carries into 2015.

Second place: Opening Day (16%)
.

Up next is Best In-Game Feature at Great American Ball Park.  The winner collected 100 of the 335 total votes.  For the second consecutive season, you chose…

InGameFeature

You people are wild about free La Rosa’s pizza, and I can’t blame ya.

Second place: Hometown Hero (12%)
.

We move on to Performance of the Year.  This category is usually reserved for Homer Bailey no-hitters, but somehow, he didn’t manage to throw one of those in 2014.  Instead, with 43% of the 337 votes, the winner is….

Performance

Second place: Aroldis Chapman: Major League Record 17.67 Strikeouts Per 9 Innings; First pitcher to average 100mph (17%)
.

Next is one of my personal favorite categories – Player You Best Not Mess With.  For the second consecutive year, you voted for…

?????????????????????????????????

Mat Latos received 28% of the 219 votes.

Second place: Devin Mesoraco (19%)
.

Finally today, we reveal the winner of Favorite Twitter Account.  The winner, with 34% of the 303 votes is…

Twitter

@DatDudeBP is not only a favorite twitter account among Reds fans, but it has established itself as a go-to social media name in all of sports.  Congrats, BP!

#THEBURTS WEEK THREE RESULTS ANNOUNCED!

It’s now time to reveal the Week Three winners.  Envelopes, please…

We start today with the Best Fielder category.  Only one man has ever held this award in the long and storied history of The Burts, and it’s going to remain that way…at least for another year.  With 265 of the 630 total votes, the four-time winner is…

Fielder

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Brandon Phillips takes home this award for the fourth straight year, although his competition was the toughest it’s ever been.  The Reds in 2014 were the best fielding team in baseball thanks to the likes of Brandon, Zack Cozart and Billy Hamilton.

Second place: Zack Cozart (23%)
.

Our next poll result is Great Red Hope for 2015. Voters feel that this category’s winner carries the most “hope” into the 2015 season. With half of the 584 votes, the winner is…

RedHope

After appearing in just 62 games in an injury-riddled 2014, Reds fans are hoping Joey Votto returns to form and leads the Cincinnati club back into the postseason.

Second place: “Player acquired via trade/free agency” (14%)
.

Up next is Best Mascot.  You know the usual suspects – Gapper, Mr. Redlegs, Mr. Red and Rosie Red.  The three-time winner in this category is Mr. Redlegs.  Can he make it four in-a-row?

BestMascot

He sure can, with 39% of the vote.  Congratulations, Redlegs!

Second place: Rosie Red (28%)
.

Here we go with the Grittiest.  Ryan Hanigan usually has a firm grip on this category, but since he’s moved on, it’s time to crown a new champion.  Who’s it going to be?

?????????????????????????????????

With 163 of the 582 votes, Devin Mesoraco is our new “Grittiest” Red.

Second place: Billy Hamilton (145 votes)
.

Finally for week three, we honor the Reds player with the Best Facial Hair.  Five nominees tallied a total of 559 votes.  The winner with 57% is…

Facial Hair

Sam LeCure regains this award after trading it back and forth with his good pal Corky Miller.  Another fantastic year for the whiskers, Sam!  Congrats!

Second place: Chris Heisey (15%)
.

#THEBURTS WEEK TWO WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

It’s now time to reveal the Week Two winners. Envelopes, please…

Our first category of Week Two is Most Outstanding Pitcher.  Five candidates netted over 700 votes.

No surprise here, the winner with 83% of the vote is….

OutstandingPitcher

Johnny Cueto went 20-9 with a 2.25 ERA for the Reds in 2014 and finished second to Clayton Kershaw in the NL Cy Young Award voting.  Cueto, this year, became 1 of only 2 pitchers in Reds history, since 1900, to produce at least 20 wins and 240 strikeouts in a season (Jim Maloney did it in 1963 & 1965).

Second place: Aroldis Chapman (13%)
.

Next up is Best Breakout Season.  The winner with 433 of the 752 total votes is…

Breakout

The season that Devin Mesoraco had in 2014 didn’t go unnoticed by the voters of the Burt Awards.  In addition to the victory in this category, he has also taken home the “Burt” for Most Valuable Player.  Congratulations, Devin!

Second place: Todd Frazier (17%)
.

Up next is Best Hair.  Bronson Arroyo dominated this category in the past, but with his departure, a new hairy hero has emerged.  The winner of The Burt with 45% of the nearly 700 votes is…

Original photo courtesy of the AP

Original photo courtesy of the AP

I think it’s obvious by the photo that the voters got this one right.  Johnny Cueto has the best dreads in the game.

Second place: Jay Bruce (18%)
.

For the first time in the long and storied history of the Burts, voters have produced an award-winning tie .  Of the 704 total votes for Player You Most Enjoy Watching, two players tallied 175 votes apiece to share this illustrious honor.  The co-winners are…

So if a “tie is like kissing your sister,” what’s it like if you’re the sister:  kissing your “Step Brothers?”  Congratulations to Aroldis Chapman and Brandon Phillips – two exciting and entertaining players.

Third place: Todd Frazier (109 votes)

PlayerWatching

…..

Finally today, we award the Burt for Super Sub.  This man finished with 300 of the 702 total votes (43%) to win…

SuperSub

Another one that voters got right on the money.  Brayan Pena was pressed into action as an everyday player after signing with the Reds as the backup catcher.  In addition to his time behind the plate, Pena also appeared regularly at first base for the injured Joey Votto.  A truly well-deserved win for Brayan.

Second place: Kristopher Negron (33%)
.

That’s all for today. Please tune in tomorrow as I reveal Week 3 winners.

#THEBURTS WEEK ONE WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

It’s now time to reveal the Week One winners.

Envelopes, please…

Traditionally, our first category is the most popular and that certainly was the case again in 2014.  The Most Valuable Player poll received a whopping 3,444 total votes!  The clear-cut winner with 74% of that result is Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco.

MesoracoMVP

Mesoraco established career highs this year in most offensive categories.  His 24 home runs as a catcher (he hit 25 overall) are the most by a Red since Johnny Bench hit 30 in 1977.  With 440 plate appearances, Devin became only the third catcher in Major League history to produce at least 24 HR and 76 RBI in 450 plate appearances or fewer, joining Mike Piazza (1994) and Ivan Rodriguez (2000).  Mesoraco was named to his first All-Star team by National League manager Mike Matheny.  He finished the year with an impressive .893 OPS.  Congratulations to 2014 Burt Award winner for MVP – Devin Mesoraco!

Second place:  Todd Frazier (18%)
.
Our next category is Best Baserunner and for the second straight year, Cool Papa Bill “ran” away with it…

Original photo by Al Behrman of the AP

Original photo by Al Behrman of the AP

Hamilton received 85% of the 1,342 votes. His 56 stolen bases were good for second in the National League, behind Dee Gordon’s (64) and were a single season franchise record for a rookie; the most by a Major League rookie since Ichiro had 56 in 2001 and the most by any Reds batter since Deion Sanders in 1997 (also 56).

Second place: Todd Frazier (10%)
.
Next is Best Newbie.  Originally slated to back up starting catcher Devin Mesoraco in 2014, Brayan Pena saw himself in the starting lineup more often than not, appearing in a career high 115 games, including 53 appearances at first base.  Prior to 2014, Brayan had only played first base four times at the Major League level.  His big smile and humble approach quickly made him a Reds fan favorite in his first year in Cincinnati.  It’s no surprise that he’s the winner of this one…

Second place: Kristopher Negron (34%)
.

Up next is Best Announcer.  Of the 11 nominees our winner amassed 525 of the 1,298 votes.

Congratulations to our first four-time winner…

Announcer

“Mercury” Marty has swept this category in each of the first four years of the Burt Awards.  He told me that you’re all invited to his big celebration party tonight at Thom’s house. Be there by 9:30 and prepare to go all night long.

Second place: Jeff Brantley (15%)

Notes:  The self-proclaimed “voice of the Reds” Joe Zerhusen finished fourth with 115 votes.
.

Our final category of the day is Best GABP Promotional Giveaway.  Nearly 1,300 votes were cast for the 23 nominees.  In the closest race of the day, first place – by a mere 7 votes – goes to…

Giveaway

The Mr. Redlegs 2015 All-Star Game bobblehead takes over after two consecutive years of dominance by the Reds Stein.

Second place: Homer Bailey Dual No-Hitter Bobblehead (150 votes)

.

That’s all for today. Please tune in next week as I reveal Week 2 Winners.

In addition to the victors above, there is one more winner to announce:

Congratulations to @J_Landen an active participant in the Burt Awards discussion. For for his efforts, he’s been selected as a random winner of a cool prize from BOR HQ.

I’ll be awarding a new winner each day next week, so feel free to get noticed by either leaving a comment on the blog or by including the hashtag #TheBurts in your tweets.

Of the 162 games that the Reds played in 2014, there were a few that stood out above the rest. Which game was your favorite?

.

The Reds Twitter roster continued to grow in 2014.  Reds fans now have online access to many of their favorite players and team personnel.  Who was your favorite of the bunch in ’14?  Last year, @LisaBraun overcame the odds to take home the title.  Will she do it again this year?

.

You and your pals are sitting around discussing the possibility of the Reds getting into an on-field brawl.  Naturally, such a discussion requires the following question: Which Reds player should you best not mess with?

.

There were several incredible performances by Reds players in 2014.  Which was the best?  Homer Bailey no-hitters have dominated this category over the past two seasons, but the field is wide-open this year.

.

Our final category of Week Four is “Best In-Game Feature at Great American Ball Park.”  The Reds production/scoreboard team is second-to-none and always provides top-flight entertainment during Reds home games.  But what’s your favorite?  Last year it was Free Pizza with 41% of the vote.

.

That’s all for this week. Check back Friday for another round of categories and nominees. Thanks for voting and don’t forget to take the discussion to Twitter by using the hashtag #TheBurts and/or leaving your thoughts in the comments section of this post!

.

Next is “Great Red Hope for 2015.” This one is very much open for interpretation.  There are several random nominees for this category; some are coming off injury, some are blue-chip prospects that might help the club next season, and one nominee remains nameless/faceless.  It’s up to you to decide which carries the most “hope” into 2015.  Last year, Billy Hamilton took home the Burt with 43% of the vote.

Next this week is Best Mascot.  You already know the usual suspects.  Last year, Mr. Redlegs became a 3-time champion in this category after winning 40% of the vote.  Will he make it four-in-a-row?

This category is for the Reds fan who loves seeing dirty uniforms, full-throttle hustle and fearless acts of accomplishment.  Who was the “grittiest” Red of 2014?  Last year, Ryan Hanigan won the Burt with 21% of the vote.

.

Our final category of Week Three is one of BOR’s favorite – Best Facial Hair.  It’s true, manager Bryan Price invoked some facial hair limitations for 2014, but the boys in red still managed to show off some stylish whiskers.

.

Without further ado, here are the new categories that need your votes…

Our first category for Week Two is Most Outstanding Pitcher.  This one should be fairly easy…

…..

Our next category is “Best Breakout Season” (not sponsored by Oxy or Clearasil).  Which Reds player used the 2014 campaign to best establish himself as a bona fide big leaguer?  There are some very strong candidates here, so choose wisely.

…..

Who had the Best Hair on the team in 2014?  Last year, 40% of you picked Bronson Arroyo. Remember this category is for best hair and shouldn’t be confused with Best Facial Hair (a category that will be unveiled in the coming weeks).

…..

Despite the club’s record, the Reds had players in 2014 that kept you glued to the game.  This category is “Player You Most Enjoy Watching.”  @DatDudeBP took home the hardware last year with 31% of the vote.

…..

Every baseball manager will tell you that it’s very important to have a good bench.  There are many crucial situations during the season and during individual games that call for a Super Sub.  Who was the best in this category for the Reds in 2014?  Last year, it was Billy Hamilton (37%).

…..

POLLS HAVE OPENED FOR THE 2014 BURT AWARDS!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Reds fans of all ages!

It’s time to vote for the fourth annual Burt Awards…or as we at BOR Headquarters like to call it – “The Burts.”

The Burts – named after Better Off Red mascot Burt BobbleRed – are fans choice awards recognizing the accomplishments and quirks that contributed to the Reds’ 2014 season.

In addition to the traditional categories (MVP, Best Pitcher, etc), we also have some unconventional awards to hand out, such as “Best Mascot,” “Favorite Game” and “Best Hair.

Beginning every Friday, through Halloween, a new batch of categories will be unveiled for voting.  Polls will close at Midnight, November 7.  Results will be posted right here on BOR on Monday, November 10.

The nominees for each category were determined by the hard-working staff at Better Off Red and members of the Cincinnati Reds front office.  We tried to limit the number of nominees to 5 per category, but as you’ll see, in some instances, we had to include more than 5.

You can vote as much and as often as you’d like.  If you lose track of the polls/nominees, the Burt Awards blog posts are listed under the “Categories” section, which is located on the sidebar of Better Off Red. –>>

*****As an added bonus, prizes will be randomly given to voters discussing the Burt Awards in the “Comments” section of each blog post, as well as to folks who Tweet about the Burts using the hashtag #TheBurts. (Again, prizes will be awarded at random).

So without further ado, the first 5 polls are open!

Our first category is 2014 Reds Most Valuable Player.  We limited the nominees to position players since we’ll also have a 2014 Reds Most Outstanding Pitcher category.  Last year, Shin-Soo Choo took home the “Burt” with 35% of the vote.

…..

This poll is for the Best Reds Baserunner.  Keep in mind, sometimes the best baserunner isn’t always the fastest.  Last year, Billy Hamilton won this category with 80% of the vote.

…..

Next is Best Newbie. Nominees were based on “rookie” status as well as “newcomer” status to the Reds club.  Last year, Shin-Soo Choo won with 82% of the vote.

…..

This poll is for Best Announcer. “Mercury” Marty Brennaman is going for his fourth consecutive Burt Award in this category. Can he do it?

…..

The final category for Week One voting is Best GABP Promotional Giveaway.  There were lots to choose from in 2014, so cast your vote wisely.  Last year the Reds Stein became a back-to-back winner; it’s a nominee again this year.

…..

COMING SOON: THE FOURTH ANNUAL BURT AWARDS

As the Reds’ season becomes a point of reference, hyperlinked in the archives of baseball web sites all across the Information Superhighway, we here at Better Off Red are preparing to supplement the hard facts of the Redlegs’ 2014 record with something we think you might like…

It’s true that we didn’t get to pour adult beverages all over ourselves like we did in the past, but we’re still allowed to have a little bit of fun, right?; here’s how…

For the fourth straight year, Better Off Red will announce its Reds end-of-the-season awards.  We here at BOR Headquarters call ‘em The Burt Awards, or “The Burts,” for short.

The Burts – named after Better Off Red mascot Burt BobbleRed – will recognize Reds superlatives from the 2014 baseball season.  Some of the categories include “Most Valuable Player,” “Most Outstanding Pitcher,” and “Best Fielder,” but we’ll also have some unconventional awards to hand out, such as “Favorite Promotional Giveaway,” “Best Mascot” and “Favorite Ballpark Food.”

The Better Off Red staff is currently working ’round the clock in compiling nominees for all of the Burt Awards.  Once the nominees are revealed, it’ll be your job to vote for the winners.  Voting will begin next week right here on BOR.

THE BURT AWARDS: FINAL WEEK WINNERS (#THEBURTS)

Five weeks ago, Better Off Red polls opened for the prestigious Cincinnati Reds end-of-the-season awards known as “The Burt Awards.” Every Monday since, a new collection of categories was unveiled for BOR readers to vote upon.  Over a month and 21,000 votes later, it’s now finally time to announce the winners of “The Burts“…

Today we will announce the winners of the Week Five categories.  For Week One results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Two results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Three results, CLICK HERE.  For Week Four results, CLICK HERE.

Envelopes please…

.

We kick off our final week of The Burt Awards with the results of the Best Nickname poll.  A year ago, The Toddfather swept the nation and took home the “Burt” with 37% of the vote.  Coincidentally, this year’s winner also netted 37% of the vote.

The winner, with 157 of the 428 total votes is…

Nickname

Second place: The Toddfather (28%)

.

Up next is Favorite Food at Great American Ball Park.  Of the 21 nominees, the winner tallied 58 of the 380 votes.

And the Burt Award goes to…

FavoriteFoodatGABP

Second place: Skyline Chili (14%)

Notes:  The popular Nacho Helmet held off Skyline by just 4 votes for the victory.  I guess no one likes Candy anymore.  It was the only nominee to not get a single vote.  Dentists everywhere, pat yourselves on the back.

.

The next category is Best Special Event of 2013.  This one wasn’t even close.  Of the 15 nominees, the winner collected over half of the 372 total votes.

And the winner is….

SpecialEvent

Second place: Opening Day (13%)

Notes:  Redsfest finished in third place, just 6 votes shy of Opening Day.

.

The next poll asked you Reds fans, “Who gets your vote for a 2014 Bobblehead?”  There were 14 random nominees for this one, but the winner looks very familiar.

With 99 of the 416 total votes, the winner is….

Bobblehead

Sam also won this category in 2013.  You folks are adamant about getting Mr. LeCure enshrined in porcelain, aren’t ya?

Second place: Sparky Anderson (14%)

Notes:  Jeff Brantley (eating a chicken leg) held off Charlie Sheen for third place.

.

The Reds 16 sellouts in 2013 were a franchise record and the season attendance of 2,492,059 was a Great American Ball Park record.  But where is it that you all most enjoyed sitting at the ol’ ball game (or standing)?  That’s what our next poll asked – What is Your Favorite Section at GABP?

Twenty-one nominees amassed 359 votes.  The winner with 99 votes is…

?????????????????????????????????

Second place: Infield Box (7%)

Notes:  This is a PERFECT time to remind you that you can now place a deposit for 2014 Reds Season Tickets!  See what all this fuss about the Sun/Moon Deck is by sitting in that section next season!  CLICK HERE for details.

.

Now, back to regularly-scheduled programming…our next category is Favorite Game-Time Start.  Ten candidates (all Cincinnati time) combined for 330 votes.

When’s the best time to watch a Reds game?  You said….

GameTimeStart

Second place: 4:05pm (11%)

Notes:  No one likes 9:40pm…it didn’t get one measly vote.

.

The next category, Reds Player with the Best Music, could’ve simply been called ‘Sinatra vs. Paint it Black.’  Every single Reds player to appear on the 2013 roster was eligible for this award, but only 2 ended up with a real chance to win – Frazier and Votto.

The winner with 87 of the 350 votes is….

PlayerWithBestMusic

Second place: Joey Votto (21%)

Notes: Frazier beat Votto by 15 votes.  I was delighted to see Mike Leake, who used an “XX” song in 2013, get 7 votes.  Seven more than I would’ve thought (sadly).

.

And it’s now time for our final category of 2013 – Favorite Place to Go Following a Reds Game.  Thirty nominees collected a combined 378 votes.

The winner, with 103 votes is…

FavoritePlacetoGo

The Holy Grail Tavern & Grille is literally right across the street from the ballpark.  It’s close proximity and friendly staff are probably what propelled it to victory.

Second place: Home (26%)

Notes: There were 15 “other” votes.  Skyline Chili (29 votes) held off Christian Moerlein Lager House (25 votes) for third place.

.

Well, that concludes the 2013 Burt Awards!  I hope you had as much fun with this as I did.  I can’t believe this was the third year of The Burts.  Where has the time gone?!

You better believe we’ll be back next season, hopefully recovering from a World Series celebration!

Before we sign off, I must thank all of you who voted on the polls and participated in the discussion/fun.  You folks are the reason we do this.  Thank you!

And congratulations to all of the prize winners this week!  Including, “mac,” an active participant in the Burt Awards discussion.  For her efforts, she has been randomly selected as this week’s final winner and will receive a cool prize pack from BOR HQ.

That’s all for now.  Have a great weekend!!

Go Reds!

Expect Good News,

Jamie
