Our Ashland, KY Reds fans came out in full force to see the Southern leg of the Reds Caravan…Thank you!

Rob Butcher checks-in from the Bluegrass State

Angilo’s Pizza in Cynthiana, Kentucky hosted our live broadcast on Reds on Radio affiliate WCYN Radio. Cruise director Zach Bonkowski’s notes indicate “tough, windy road to get there” from Maysville. Accurate description, but beautiful, beautiful country. The restaurant was decked out in Reds gear, complete with photos from past Caravan visits featuring Dusty Baker, Brandon Phillips, vintage 2009 Jay Bruce, Chris Heisey and our old friend Ryan Freel. The takeout food was outstanding.

And more photo fun from the road:

Our 2013 Reds Caravan kicked-off this morning from the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum.  Three tours will cover over 2800 miles, 4 states, and 15 public stops in just 4 days.  We hope to see you along the way!

Here’s video of us getting things started: Kick-off Event

Update from Rob Butcher, Reds Director of Media Relations

The Western Leg’s first stop was at Reds on Radio affiliate WFTM Radio in Maysville, Kentucky. We already decided it will be hard to beat the food: Skillet potatoes, hot brown cassarole, wings with Kentucky Bourbon sauce, baby back ribs and the area’s famous transparent tarts. That was the first of today’s 5 scheduled meals. The members of our caravan were commissioned Kentucky Colonels by Governor Steven L. Beshear. Next stop, WCYN Radio live broadcast from Angelo’s Pizza in Cynthiana.

Win stuff, new hats and anything else I can think of…

Our friend Jamie is out for the day and so you get the understudy. He does plan on being back in tomorrow and will announce the winners of the Better Off Red Headquarters’ Clean Up Contest upon his return. His office door is locked or I’d try to go through the boxes to see if there is anything I want to keep first.

We’re still looking for a correct answer in the Twitter portion of the contest.  Because I don’t have as many Twitter followers as Mr. Ramsey (follow me at @lisabraun), I’m going to help you out and post the question here on the blog too.  You will still need to send your response to @jamieblog with the hashtag #BetterOffRed.  Here’s the question.  It’s a tough one…

@jamieblog: #BetterOffRed:  My grandfather used to have lots of clutter in his garage.  My grandmother called it junk.  My grandfather called it _______.

I’m going to give you a hint.  Don’t tell him I did.  Hint: mercancías

And now the portion of the blog I’d like to call “OK, YES, CALM DOWN, THERE ARE NEW BP CAPS”

There’s been some talk via social media lately about the new 2013 Reds Batting Practice Caps.  Since there hasn’t been an official announcement yet from MLB and New Era, I decide to ask around about the background on these caps and share a sneak peek.

2013 BP Caps

2013 BP Caps

Dugout jackets, BP jerseys and BP hats for MLB Clubs are changed about every 3 or 4 years.   In June of 2012, MLB approached the Reds with the a new design concept for the 2013 on-field Batting Practice Cap.  New Era recommended artwork for Clubs that featured a more traditional baseball look on a new lighter weight, more breathable, structured, high crown cap.  It was recommended to and approved by the Reds to go with the Mr. Redlegs sleeve patch from our jerseys. I mean, who doesn’t love Mr. Redlegs? Feedback from the clubhouse led us to choosing the black for our 2012 Road BP Caps.

You’ll be able to check out these new caps starting in February at Spring Training in Goodyear.

Thanks for hanging out with me today on Better Off Red.  Here’s wishing you a happy and healthy 2013 with plenty of these…

Take care, Lisa

Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts At Redsfest

There have been a lot of Reds fans that watched the ESPN video with Todd Frazier and asked us how they can help.

In the wake of the recent storms in the northeast, the Reds have teamed up with Todd Frazier, infielder and New Jersey native, in support of the relief efforts. Please stop by the giant piggy bank at Redsfest to donate to the cause. Proceeds benefit the relief efforts of The Presbyterian Church of Toms River as well as the Toms River East Little League.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Frazier’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

As most Reds fans know, Todd Frazier hails from Toms River, New Jersey, a coastal community of about 90,000 residents. Toms River took a direct hit and was devastated when Hurricane Sandy made landfall on October 29.

Todd grew up and still lives in Toms River and is coordinating relief efforts to help two organizations: Toms River East Little League and The Presbyterian Church of Toms River, his home church.

At Redsfest, there will be a booth on the main floor featuring an oversize piggy bank where fans are encouraged to donate to the Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts.

Over the past few weeks, Toms River East Little League’s indoor baseball facility has been turned into a FEMA relief center, providing clothes and food to local families.  On December 1st, the Toms River Little League indoor baseball facility will be dedicated and renamed “Frazier Field House”  to honor the Frazier family and all they’ve done for the community.

Todd’s brother’s Charlie and Jeff are both former MLB players and all three brothers played for Toms River East Little League.  Todd was on the Toms River East Little League team that won the Little League World Series in 1998.

This afternoon I stopped over at the Duke Energy Convention Center to check in with Redsfest Superstar-Executive Producer-Czar, Zach Bonkowski, and see how the set up was going.  I think there’s still a few things to get in place before December 7 & 8.

The brand new red carpet is in!

This is the area where you will be able find Better Off Red next week.

This room will be filled with poker players on Saturday night, December 8.

Zach and Patrick better get to work.

Super big jersey welcomes you to Redsfest.

The Redsfest main stage goes down there.

Here’s the stage for the new third floor Reds Heads Kids Fun Zone area.

We’ve got one week to go and a lot to do.  But we’ll be ready!
