Happy Reds Cap Day everybody!! We have some new members to the club and I'll post their photos in a second...

First, I'd like to let you all know that I personally watched the Reds Spring Training truck leave the ballpark moments ago and head for the highway. For me, that's when it starts to sink in that baseball season is about to start. I took some video of the truck and interviewed both the truck driver as well as Reds Clubhouse Manager Rick Stowe. Those videos will be up on Reds.com at some point. Check 'em out when you get a chance.

Mark Sheldon wrote this nice piece about packing up the truck and taking all of the stuff to Arizona

In addition to the video, I also snapped some photos of the very important truck...it's very "moving" footage (har har!). Enjoy....

Hey everybody...

I have a confession to make. Every year around Spring Training time, I used to get super pumped about the team and optimistic about its chances of competing for a division title.

That is until a couple of years ago, when I started coaching myself not to get too excited in March for fear of a broken heart in June or July. Losing seasons turned my enthusiasm into cynicism. Terrible, right? Especially for a guy who works FOR the team! Shameful.

Well, I'm done with that line of thinking. Here's why:

1. I genuinely think the Reds can and will win the NL Central in 2010. How's that for cynicism? And trust me; I'm not just saying that because I have a Reds logo on my Castellini-signed paychecks. I'm excited about the moves the club has made. On paper, "we" are as good, if not better, than anyone in the division.

2. It's a lot more fun to be enthusiastic and excited than cynical and pessimistic. This year, I think my excitement is justified. Some of you will probably disagree, which is fine, and I respect that. Just keep in mind, the school janitor told my friends and I in 3rd grade that there was no Santa Claus and I've been scarred ever since. Please don't be my school's janitor. Let me have my hope.

If you wish to explain why I'm wrong, then please - for the love of Eppa Rixey - make it an articulate thought rather than "as long as so-and-so is affiliated with the team they'll never win," or something equally dull.

==========

Now, if you're as excited about the upcoming season as I am, you'll probably be interested to know that through noon on Friday, 2/12, you can register at reds.com/openingday for the chance to purchase up to 4 individual Opening Day tickets (a limited number of tickets are available through this opportunity). Winners will be selected randomly from a pool of registrants. For more info on this, check out reds.com/openingday.

==========

Tomorrow is shaping up to be a fun day in Reds Land. Not only does the Bobblehead with No Name finally get an official moniker, but Jay Bruce will take to the basketball court with the world famous Harlem Globetrotters at Ford Arena in his hometown of Beaumont, Texas.

"The Globetrotters have been positive role models for the youth of the world for more than eight decades," said the Reds' right fielder. "I'm anxious to see how my baseball skills translate to the basketball court."

Jay also is donating to the Beaumont Metropolitan YMCA 125 tickets to the game.

Let's hope he doesn't fall for the ol' bucket of water vs. the bucket of confetti trick.

==========

If you get a chance on Tuesday (2/9), stop by By Golly's Bar and Grill in Milford from 6:30-8:30pm for the Reds Hall of Fame Membership Drive Event. Reds Hall of Famer Tom Browning will be on hand to mingle with guests and talk about how great it was being a member of the Rock Star Tour of the Reds Caravan a couple of years ago.

There will be door prizes, a silent auction and more. The event is open to all ages (By Golly's is a very family-friendly venue). For more info, visit www.bygollys.com or call 513-765-7923.

==========

In addition to my plea for new Reds Cap Club members and photos of Reds-friendly businesses, soon I'm going to start a new feature on the blog dedicated to your most sacred Reds/baseball memorabilia. I know a lot of you out there have something Reds or baseball related that you cherish and hold dear. If you'd like to share what it is with the entire world, email me at jramsey@reds.com. I'd love to put your photo/story on the blog. Since I've accumulate a lot of stuff through the years, I'm going to participate, too!

==========

Well that's all for now. Thanks for logging on. As always, I TRULY appreciate your support. Thank you, sincerely.

Be safe, have fun and pursue happiness!

Go Redlegs!

Hi folks...

What do you all think of the moves the club made yesterday? The Reds added a couple of bona fide big leaguers in Orlando Cabrera and Aaron Miles and created spots by dealing Willy Taveras and Adam Rosales. If you were one of the many who thought the team needed to address the shortstop position, I think the club adequately did so by adding Cabrera. I'm not naïve to the feelings a lot of you had for Willy as a player, so I think both moves yesterday were met with approval by the majority of the Reds fanbase.

On a personal note, I'm going to miss Rosey. One of the nicest guys in this game. He's the first player since I've worked for the Reds, to approach me in the clubhouse to introduce himself, having already knew my name. I wish him nothing but success and good luck and I hope all of you continue to root him on, too.

==========

Now, many of you have asked about the Bobblehead with No Name. I'm happy to report that he has been returned safely and is resting comfortably in my office. Unfortunately, he didn't get a chance to ride along with me on the Reds Caravan (something about Visa problems), but I did bring him some souvenirs from the road to soothe is agitation.

As for his name? ....tune in Thursday.

Hey, if you folks get a chance, check out the Louisville Bats Facebook Page. Our Triple-A affiliate is doing some great things down there in the Bluegrass State, and I hope you'll check 'em out and "become a fan" on their site.

==========

With all of the stuff going on yesterday, I didn't get a chance to properly put the cap on the Reds Caravan. We had a great time on the North Leg and I hope you all had a chance to follow the entire tour here on Better Off Red. If so, you can tell it's a lot of fun for us...but a lot of work, too. I personally want to thank the people who tend to get forgotten when the recognition gets handed out. It's easy for the guys riding the bus. All we have to do is make sure we show up on time and leave on time. Piece of cake. It's the folks NOT on the bus, who in my opinion deserve most of the praise...

People like:

Kathryn Braun, Ashley Vella and Adam Shaffer who were absolutely fantastic in getting the venues set up for our stops, assisting with the fans and their questions, taking down the set-up at the conclusion of our stops, ordering food for the guys on the bus and then driving hundreds of miles to the next stop to do it all over again. It's exhausting work and they simply dominated it.

Nick St. Pierre who as Gapper, is one of the most entertaining people I know and who is simply outstanding with the fans, especially the young ones.

Eric Keller, Patrick Montague and Claire Horstman who drove all over our great state of Ohio (and into the great state of West Virginia, too!) to meet up with us and provide information to the fans regarding ticket sales, and special community nights for cities like Portsmouth, Celina and Zanesville.

Members of our hall of fame staff, Dustin and Craig Bradds, two of the nicest people you'll ever meet, who followed the caravan to nearly every stop and set-up/broke-down their heavy display cases, all so the fans all over Reds Country could get a taste of the Reds Hall of Fame.

Ed McMasters and John Cappella worked tirelessly as our sponsor representatives from Cincinnati USA Regional Tourism Network and CincinnatiUSA.com.

Michael Anderson, Diana Torry and Charley Frank also deserve a lot of credit for their help with several of our stops.

These folks don't ride on the bus. They don't get to take naps on a rolling luxury liner with digital HD-TV at their disposal. They aren't met at the caravan stops with roaring applause. They aren't waited on hand-and-foot. But you know what? They're the ones who do all the work. And they deserve a lot more credit than us guys on the bus.

And these are just the people from the North Tour. Credit also goes to everyone who had a hand in the West and South Tours as well. Especially, my dear friend Zach Bonkowski, Rob Butcher, Larry Herms, Ryan Niemeyer, Corey Hawthorne, Casandra Ersel, Chelsea Theaker, Colin Ethier, Brandon Bowman, Joe Zerhusen, Bart Conway, Lindsey Lander, Matthew Wagner, Tony Barton and Gil Cedar.

Jarrod Rollins was a tremendous help this year in his efforts to keep Better Off Red updated with continuous reports from the road. Myself as well as Rob Butcher and Larry Herms sent Jarrod photos and recaps from all 3 legs of the caravan, and he did a great job of gathering and posting so you folks could follow along on our journey.

I also want to thank Mike Middaugh, who as our motorcoach driver, got us to where we had to be in a timely, efficient and safe manner. I've been on the Mike Liner 3 times now, and he's simply a fantastic man and a great driver.

Obviously, the guys on the bus, the "rock stars" are my guys - my team. We have a great group and they really do feel like my "band of brothers." Bob Miller is one of my favorite people in this game, so it's always a treat to be riding with him. Same goes for Chris Welsh and Brandon Phillips, both of whom I admire tremendously.

It was really nice getting to know Glenn Braggs and Zack Cozart. Both turned out to be awesome dudes. Glenn is one of the humblest, friendliest guys I've ever met and Zack is a class-act kid who I hope goes very far in this game.

And then there's Mercury Marty, who I think I might take a bullet for. He makes this whole thing fun...and is probably the funniest human being on the planet.

Finally, my main man Ryan Rizzo, who is the point-man for the North Leg. An unsung hero, Ryan is one of my best friends and one of the hardest workers in the organization. He's a large part as to why the Reds Caravan is the best in Major League Baseball.

My most sincere thanks to all of the people I mentioned, but also thank YOU Reds fans. I love you folks and really want the team to bring you home a pennant this year. You most certainly deserve it.

You guys and gals who brought signs and who admitted (publicly, even) that you read the blog, humbled me. Thank you for reading!

==========

Concluding today's post, I want to send a special "shout-out" to Russ Dodd, a loyal Better Off Red reader who subjects himself to my lame humor just to catch up with the team, follow the latest adventures of the Bobblehead with No Name and see the newest members of the Reds Cap Club. Thank you, Russ. Hang in there buddy!

That's all for now. More later....

Thanks SO very much for logging on. I really, genuintely appreciate it.

Jamie

REDS ACQUIRE INFIELDER AARON MILES FROM ATHLETICS
Send Adam Rosales & Willy Taveras To Oakland

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the acquisitions of IF Aaron Miles and a player to be named from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for IF Adam Rosales and OF Willy Taveras.

"I'm happy to be reunited with Aaron, who played a key role in our World Series championship in St. Louis," said Jocketty, who will be available to the media today at 3:00 p.m. in the field level interview room at Great American Ball Park. "He's a quality infielder, a quality person and will be an asset to our club."

Miles, 33, was hampered last season by injuries to his throwing shoulder and elbow and made just 74 apps for the Chicago Cubs. On December 3 he was traded to Oakland, along with IF/OF Jake Fox and cash, in exchange for IF/OF Matthew Spencer, RHP Jeff Gray and RHP Ronny Morla.

Miles is a career .282 hitter in 717 games for the Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals and Cubs. In 2008, he hit a career-high .317 in 134 games. Miles was a member of the Cardinals' 2006 World Series championship club and has played every defensive position, including 3 appearances as a pitcher, except first base and catcher.

Taveras, 28, last season for the Reds hit .240 with 1 HR, 15 RBI and 25 stolen bases in 102 appearances for the Reds. Rosales, 26, in 2009 hit .213 in 87 games for the Reds and .349 in 30 appearances at Class AAA Louisville.

        Mercury Marty's closing remarks as the Northern Leg wraps up their caravan stop....

"It is with deep sadness, regret, and yes melancholy that the Northern Tour today came to an end. To say that this Band of Brothers, so to speak, has climaxed another highly successful foray into what we affectionally refer to as Reds Country. In fact, when the word successful was first defined as a member in good standing of the King's English, never did they realize that the level of excitement generated by Bob and the Phat-Ons would reach such an incredibly high level. I'm a younger man today than when this trip began on Thursday morning...younger in more than ways than I have time to recount. The main reason would be that I have had the great privilege of rubbing shoulders with people of tremendously high character, ethics and, it goes without saying, great popularity. Some would call this coming together, and the success derived thereof, a juggernaut, if not a dynasty. I chooose instead to simply define Bob and the Phat-Ons as good guys. Thanks to you all and to all a good night."

        From the one and only Rob Butcher:

The Western Leg of the Reds Caravan has completed its highly successful mission: 13 stops over 4 days covering 3 states. Walt Jocketty, Bob Castellini, Phil Castellini, Thom Brennaman, Scott Rolen, Todd Benzinger, Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier were remarkable. Along the way we visited Reds on Radio affiliates, restaurants, malls, the Air Force Museum and Millett Hall on the campus of beautiful Miami University. We had a million laughs on the motor coach, and we met literally thousands of Reds fans who are very excited about the 2010 season.

Between the 3 legs, we saturated Reds country. The healthy competition between the Western ("West is Best"), Southern (Herms' group) and Northern ("Rock Star") legs provided fans at home with a very unique perspective as they followed us on Reds.com. We tried to give you a flavor of what was happening, and I think we did. We thank MLB.com's technical crew and our own Jarrod Rollins, who served as our point man for the blog, for getting that information on the team's site. MLB and Jarrod worked about 18 hours a day for more than 3 days.

We would be remiss not to thank those who worked behind the scenes, most notably Zach Bonkowski, who put together all 3 legs and who accompanied us on the Western Leg. Motor coach driver Patty Patterson, for the ninth consecutive year, was splendid. We can't thank our advance crew enough: Mr. Redlegs (Jay Heilman), Ryan Niemeyer, Chelsea Theaker, Colin Ethier, Corey Hawthorne and Casandra Ersel along with Jackie Reau and JP Owens of Cincinnati USA Regional Tourism Network. You guys were terrific. Thanks for reading, and we'll do it again next year.
The Western Tour began its final stop of the 2010 Caravan this morning at Millett Hall on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The stage setup is spectacular, probably the best the Western Tour has seen so far. The stage is set against a black curtain backdrop, and above it is a huge video screen that is showing Reds highlights. It adds a lot to the atmosphere of the event. Rob Butcher estimates a turnout of roughly 400 fans for the first ever Caravan visit to Millett.

Rock stars Todd Frazier and Jay Bruce sign for the masses at Millett Hall.
