Over the weekend Reds outfielder Jay Bruce was named to the National League All-Star team as an injury replacement.  Jay is currently batting .267 with 18 home runs, 63 RBI, .315 OBP and a .538 SLG.  He ranks among National League leaders in:

Home Runs (T13th)
Triples (6, T2nd)
RBI (T4th)
Slugging (11th)
Extra Base Hits (44, T7th)
Go Ahead RBI (16, T3rd)
Total Bases (171, 12th)

Bruce has played in 83 games this season.  Below is his slash line (AVG/OBP/SLG) and home runs after his first 83 games of each of his 9 big league seasons:

2016: .267/.315/.538, 18HR
2015: .251/.342/.464, 13 HR
2014: .222/.304/.394, 10 HR
2013: .278/.323/.518, 18 HR
2012: .249/.326/.505, 18 HR
2011: .258/.327/.478, 18 HR
2010: .277/.354/.463, 10 HR
2009: .209/.285/.444, 18 HR
2008: .252/.295/.423, 14 HR

The rap on Bruce is that he’s a streaky player, enjoying stretches of scalding hot highs but also distressingly bad lows. Not so in 2016.  Jay had one small hiccup from May 19-23 in which he went hitless in 13 at-bats over 4 games.  Other than that, he hasn’t gone hitless in more than 2 consecutive games. Aside from that 4-game 0-for-skid in May, he’s only been without a hit in back-to-back games 4 times.

Here’s to a strong finish this season for Jay Bruce.

Don’t forget to tune in tonight to the MLB Home Run Derby featuring Reds outfielder/All-Star Adam Duvall!

The show begins at 8pm ET on ESPN.

If Duvall advances past the first round (against San Diego Padre Wil Myers) he would face the winner of the Todd Frazier/Carlos Gonzalez matchup.

If this year’s event is even a fraction as exciting as last year’s derby in GABP, we’re all in for a treat!

That’s all for now, more in a bit!

Expect Good News,
