Cool Papa Bill is celebrating his 25th birthday today!

From today’s Reds Gamenotes:

  • His career on-base percentage of .423 ranks first among active players and T15th all-time in Major League history
  • His career OPS of .959 ranks third among active players (Albert Pujols .980, Miguel Cabrera .963) and T17th all-time
  • His .328 career average with RISP ranks third among active players with at least 800ab (Cabrera .337, Joe Mauer .332)
  • Has at least 100 walks for the third time in his career (110 in 2011, club-record 135 in 2013)
  • Thirteen times this season walked at least 3 times in a game, with a high of 4 walks on 7/31 vs Pit
  • His 38 walks in August were a club record for a calendar month (32, Joe Morgan, July 1979) and the most by any Major League batter since SF’s Barry Bonds walked 40 times in September 2004
  • Reached base safely in 122 of his 135 apps, including an active streak of 27 straight games beginning 8/11 that ranks as the fourth-longest active streak in the Major Leagues (33-85, .388, .570obp) and a season-high of 32 straight games from 5/20-6/25 (.310ba, .424obp)

  • On 8/20 and 8/21 missed 2 starts with inflammation in his right biceps tendon but has hit safely in 14 of 17 starts since his return (25-71, .352)
  • Since the All-Star break is hitting .325 (66-203), seventh-best in the National League and including .353 in his last 37 apps (53-150)
  • Is approaching 300 career doubles (294)

LHP Brandon Finnegan, who was recalled yesterday by the Reds from AAA-Louisville, spoke to the media about his promotion. Video of that media conference is below.

Finnegan is one of the three left-handed pitchers, along with John Lamb and Cody Reed, acquired from Kansas City in the Johnny Cueto trade.

Congratulations to the Daytona Tortugas!  They blanked Clearwater last night, 3-0, in the first game of  a best of 3 Florida State League playoff series.

LHP Amir Garrett was brilliant in his 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just 1 hit and no walks while striking out 12. C Chad Wallach paced the ‘Tugas with 2 hits and 3B Taylor Sparks belted a solo homer.  Clearwater did not have a runner advance past second base.

Garrett told the Daytona Beach News Journal: “This was one of the best games I’ve pitched. They (the Threshers) couldn’t seem to catch up with my fastball, so I kept throwing it. I also was able to mix in a slider which had some bite to it and a few changeups. Altogether, it all kept them off balance most of the time.”

Garrett’s Game Score last night was 87.  To fill you in on what Game Score is, here’s some help from Wikipedia (click on the image to enlarge):

The highest possible Game Score in a 9-inning game is 114, and that’s if the pitcher throws all 9 innings and strikes out every batter he faces. So, Garrett’s 87 is considered pretty darn good.

While we’re congratulating Reds minor league teams, we can’t forget about the Rookie level Billings Mustangs.  With last night’s 6-1 victory vs. Great Falls, the Mustangs clinched the Pioneer League North Division second-half title and became the third Reds farm team this season to qualify for the playoffs!

Billings takes on Missoula tonight in the first game of a best-of-3 playoff series.  Good luck, Ponies!
