REDS EXTEND WALT JOCKETTY’S CONTRACT
General Manager Signs Through 2016
CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Reds President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Castellini today announced the signing of President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty to a 2-year contract extension through the 2016 season.
Jocketty’s original contract was to have expired at the end of this season.
“This franchise has had great success under Walt’s guidance, and we’re delighted he has signed a 2-year extension,” Castellini said.
Jocketty joined the organization in January 2008 as a special advisor to Castellini, and 3 months later he was named to his current position. Including his time in St. Louis, he has produced 10 playoff teams and has won 8 National League Central Division titles. His 2006 Cardinals team won the World Series.
In the last 5 seasons, the Redlegs won at least 90 games 3 times and have been in the Postseason 3 times, including National League Central Division championships here in 2010 and 2012 and last year’s Wild Card berth. In franchise history, the successful Postseason stretch of 3 appearances in 4 seasons from 2010-2013 is matched only by the teams that made 6 playoff appearances during the Big Red Machine era (1970, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1979).
In 2010, in just his third season at the helm of the club’s baseball operations, Jocketty led the Reds to the National League Central Division title with a 91-71 record and their first appearance in the Postseason since 1995.
After that 2010 championship season, Jocketty was recognized by his peers and Sporting News as Major League Baseball’s Executive of the Year. He also won that prestigious award in 2000 and 2004.
