It began 3 months ago on MLB Network’s “Hot Stove” program; a tournament containing 30 of the game’s biggest names.  Superstars such as Evan Longoria, Justin Verlander, Buster Posey, Mike Trout, David Wright and Ryan Braun squared off in daily “twitter elections” to determine who would ultimately be crowned “The Face of MLB.”

Two players each day were pitted against one another and “voted” for by the fans on Twitter, using the hashtags of the players’ names (ex: #JoeyVotto, #MattKemp, etc.).  If Player A received more “votes” than Player B, he’d move on to the next round.  An NCAA-style bracket was even posted and updated daily on MLB Network’s web site.

Well, finally, the tournament has concluded and the results are in.

I’m proud to say the winner of the whole darn thing doesn’t play in New York, Los Angeles or Chicago.  He plays right here in Cincinnati – 2010 National League Most Valuable Player Joey Votto!

Joey went “head-to-head” with Joe Mauer, Jose Bautista, Derek Jeter, Andrew McCutchen and Matt Kemp, and he beat ’em all to become the “The Face of MLB.”

What does “The Face of MLB” mean, exactly?  No one is really sure, but what we do know is Joey is the winner…and winning is sweet, right?

Major kudos to Reds fans and fans all around the world who participated by using “#JoeyVotto” in their tweets.  It’s a testament to, not only how revered Joey is among fans, but also to how active and polished Reds supporters are with social media.

Reds fans, take pride and bask for a moment in that National Spotlight.  You deserve it….as does Joey.

(I’ll have the video from this morning’s MLB Network interview with Joey, posted soon. Stay tuned to BOR).
