TRIVIA FOR A SHIRT ANSWER

Courtesy of Redleg Journal by Rhodes & Snyder…

September 4, 1999 – “The Reds club a National League record nine home runs in a 22-3 drubbing of the Phillies at Veterans Stadium.  Eight different Cincinnati hitters connected for homers, which broke the major league record.”

Eddie Taubensee hit two home runs, and Dmitri Young, Jeffrey Hammonds, Greg Vaughn, Aaron Boone, Pokey Reese, Brian Johnson and Mark Lewis each added one.  After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Reds scored three runs in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth, nine in the fifth, one in the sixth, one in the seventh, and six in the eighth.”

Congratulations to this week’s winner, @GCoch!

Don’t fret, we’ll play again next week.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

An absolutely gorgeous day today in the Queen City.  It’s the kind of weather that softens the blow of not being in Goodyear.

After being on a self-imposed quarantine for the past several days due to the sniffles, I was finally able to get out this afternoon to walk around the ballpark and breath in the fresh air.  (author’s note: Man, I can’t wait for baseball.)

Lots of winter/spring projects going on at 100 Joe Nuxhall Way

Do you remember the red picnic tent adjacent to Mr. Red’s Smokehouse?  It’s currently being renovated to match the appearance of the smokehouse (and it’s looking pretty good).

Head Groundskeeper Doug Gallant is probably pleased with the weather this winter.  He currently has the full field blanket on.  You should see it, Doug’s wife knitted it herself.

I saw a dude up in the view level cleaning seats with a power washer.  For a second, it felt like we were prepping for a game tomorrow.  It was a great sight to see.

Otherwise, all’s quiet here.  I’d say a third of our staff are currently (or have already been) in Goodyear.  I take the big bird west on March 8…and I’m counting down the seconds.

I stopped in the Reds Team Shop (by Majestic) during my afternoon stroll.  I think for the first time ever, I made it in and out of there without buying anything.  There’s always so much cool stuff in there that it’s hard to say no.  I nearly bought a knit hat and a shirt.  Oh and they just added a Reds scarf to the inventory and it’s fantastic.

After work today, I’m joining several of my coworkers at the brand new Christian Morelein Lager House to take part in long-time Reds employee Michael Truong’s going-away party.  Michael has worked in our IT department since the Cinergy Field days and he’s going to be missed around here.  I plan to snap some photos of the party and of inside the gorgeous new Lager House building.

Well, that’s all I’ve got for now.  Enjoy the pics and as always…expect good news!

Thanks for logging on!

REDS MUSEUM MEMBERS GRANT MAKE-A-WISH

From my colleague Michael Anderson

Reds Museum members help Make-A-Wish Foundation grant wish of West Chester 16-year-old

On January 19 at the Reds Hall of Fame & Museum, Reds Hall of Famer Chris Sabo presented 16-year-old Wish Child Cody and the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Southern Ohio Region with a check for $7,800.

With assistance from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Southern Ohio Region, Cody wished to have all the equipment needed to become a DJ. The donation of $7,800, enough to fulfill Cody’s entire wish, was generated through Reds Hall of Fame & Museum membership sales in 2011.

A portion of the proceeds from the $200 “MVP” membership dues is given to a Hall of Famer’s charity of choice. Chris Sabo was the MVP partner in 2011 and he chose the Make-A-Wish Foundation as the charity. The museum had 156 MVP members in 2011.

Cody, from West Chester, suffers from Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare cancer found in the bone or soft tissue. Some symptoms of this life-threatening medical condition are swelling and intense bone pain. He has big dreams of entertaining through music, enjoys learning about history and wants to travel to Europe.

“We are thrilled that this collaboration among our members, Hall of Famer Chris Sabo, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation was so successful,” said Reds Hall of Fame & Museum Executive Director Rick Walls. “We thank our Most Valuable Partner Chris Sabo and our MVP members whose contributions helped make Cody’s wish come true.”

One of the most accomplished third basemen in Reds history, Sabo played for the Reds for five years from 1988 to 1993. He was a three-time All-Star, 1988 NL Rookie of the Year and during the Reds 1990 World Championship season led the club in home runs, doubles and runs scored. Sabo was elected into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2010.
