PREGAME PHOTOS: 7/30

A few things about tonight’s pre-game photos…

  • I can only imagine how the conversation went in the outfield between Bronson Arroyo and Aroldis Chapman.
  • Good to see Reds legend Eric Davis on the field for batting practice.  However, he was wearing an outfit that made me think he had just arrived from his shift in the ER.
  • Brian Wilson’s beard is disgusting.
  • One of the rare instances in which Dontrelle Willis isn’t smiling.
  • I love the photo of Stubbs making a weird face.

QUOTE BOAT

“He’s been hurt all year.  You just feel bad for a guy that has worked that hard and missed most of the year like he has, but he certainly looked good.”- Louisville manager Rick Sweet on rehabbing RHP Jared Burton (Louisville Courier Journal)

“They’re having fun and they’re winning.  It’s a lot easier when the kids are winning…They feed off each other more than any team I’ve been around.  It’s a tight-knit group and they follow each other’s lead.”- Dayton hitting coach Alex Pelaez (Dayton Daily News)

“He cusses in Italian, which is really funny,”  – Dayton manager Delino DeShields on LHP Luca Panerati (Dayton Daily News)

ELIAS SAYS…

From our good friends at Elias Sports Bureau

• Edgar Renteria’s 13th-inning single sent the winning run across the plate as the Reds downed the Giants, 4-3.  Renteria now has five hits in nine extra-inning at-bats this season – after he produced exactly those numbers in extra innings while playing for the Giants last season.  In fact, over the past five seasons, Renteria is batting .423 in extra innings, with 22 hits in 52 at-bats; since 2006, Nick Markakis (24 for 52) is the only major-leaguer with more extra-inning hits than Renteria.

“DEFEAT ISN’T BITTER IF YOU DON’T SWALLOW IT”

At 50-55 the Reds are a season-high 5 games under .500 and 6.5 games behind first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central Division.  They trail both the Cardinals and Pirates by 5 games.

Judging by the current mood in RedsLand (and from my Twitter timeline), some Cincinnati fans are ready to cash in their chips; throw in the ol’ proverbial towel.

Frankly, I think that’s an absolutely ridiculous idea.

Yep,  I’m fully aware of the club’s recent on-field struggles and I’m as frustrated as you are.  But, I’m not leaving until they turn off the lights.

I work for the team, so I realize you might be skeptical of this blog post.  Some of you might suspect I’m simply spewing company propaganda or writing too much with my heart instead of my head.  Maybe you’re right but the fact is, there are 56 games remaining after tonight’s.  No team ever won its division on July 29.

“Prosperity makes friends; adversity tries them.”

The following teams didn’t give up when their seasons looked all but over…

  • On August 9, 1930 the St. Louis Cardinals faced a 12-game deficit.  They proceeded to win 39 of their final 49 games to win the National League pennant.
  • In 1936, the New York Giants were in fifth-place, 10.5 games out of first.  They went 50-21 the rest of the way to win the pennant by 5 games.
  • On August 5, 1942, the Cardinals were 10 games back.  They won 44 of their final 53 games to take the pennant by 2 games.
  • On August 12, 1951, the Giants were 13 games behind the first-place Dodgers.  The Giants went 37-8 in their final 45 games and beat Brooklyn for the pennant, thanks to a dramatic home run by Bobby Thomson.  (“The Giants win the pennant, the Giants win the pennant!)
  • In August of 1964 the Cardinals began a stretch in which they went 28-11 to overcome an 11-game deficit and win the National League pennant.
  • On August 14, 1969, the New York Mets faced a 10-game deficit, then went on a 38-11 run to win the National League East by 8 games.
  • Both the Mets (11.5 games out on August 5) and the Reds (11 games out on July 1) seemed out of it late in the 1973 season.  They ended up squaring off against each other in the playoffs.
  • Remember Bucky Dent in 1978?  The Yankee team he played for that season trailed the Red Sox by 14 games on July 20.  From that point on the Bronx Bombers won 52 of their next 73, including a 1-game playoff over Boston to win the AL East.
  • The 1989 Toronto Blue Jays found themselves in sixth-place in the AL East with a 38-45 mark.  They then went 51-28 over the final 12 weeks to win the division by 2 games.
  • On July 23, 1993, the Atlanta Braves were 10 games out of first-place in the NL West.  They won 49 of their final 65 games to win the division by 1 game.
  • The Seattle Mariners were a whopping 13 games out of first on August 3, 1995.  The Mariners went 35-20 the rest of the way to win the AL West.

(Thanks to George Vass’ article from October 2005 on BNET.com for the helpful information)

So you see, this season is far from over.  It’s easy to get discouraged (and justifiably so), but don’t give up on our boys just yet.

Over the next 19 games the Reds face the Giants (61-44), Astros (35-70), Cubs (42-63), Rockies (49-56), Padres (46-60) and Nationals (49-55).  A very favorable schedule.

Keep the faith, Fonzies.  If we remain calm and cool and positive, who knows…it might pay off in the end.

“The man who wins may have been counted out several times, but he didn’t hear the referee.”

Expect good news,

Jamie
