Run to the desert
You will see all that you need to see
Run to the desert
You will be all that you need to be…

- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

…………………………………………..

Since I arrived in Arizona a month and 8 days ago…

  • I watched the Super Bowl here, along with an endless amount of college basketball games, two hockey games and several Reds Spring Training games.   I also PLAYED baseball during Reds Fantasy Camp.
  • We observed Presiden’ts Day, Mardi Gras, Women’s Day and Ash Wednesday.
  • I stayed at two hotels and was assigned three different cars to drive.
  • I went to the movies three times and saw one good one.
  • I snapped thousands of photos of Reds baseball.  I was also asked to take photos for a co-worker’s engagement as well as a co-worker’s daughter’s visiting kindergarten class.
  • I appreciated hanging out with my pal and fellow Reds staffer Zach Bonkowski while he was here…especially during the week in which I was a bit out of sorts.
  • I swapped music with some of my favorite people in this business including Bart Swain, Daniel Ray Herrera and of course, Matt Maloney.
  • And speaking of music, I fell in love with the Cave Singers.
  • Everything comes with fries.
  • Rob Butcher is the best boss in the world.  Fact.
  • The makers of Blue Moon saw a demand for their product reach record levels.
  • The Charlie Sheen phenomenon came and went.
  • Earthquake, floods, tsunamis, revolutions and bus crashes made me very thankful for the important things.
  • Billy Hamilton is every bit of a gentleman as he is fast.
  • I’ve never felt more wanted by the club and “part of it” as I do now.
  • Without interns, baseball teams, such as our own, would be a mess.
  • Marty Brennaman is in his element when there is sun and baseball involved.
  • I don’t ever remember seeing a more beautiful sky as I have here.
  • Ho Ho Kam is just fun to say.
  • Corky Miller is baseball.
  • I put together a nice photo collage of Mike Leake “waving” to me.
  • From the Majors to the Minors to the front office, to the guys/gals at Fantasy Camp, to the special assistants to the parking attendants….I had never been surrounded by so many genuinely good people as I was during my time here.
  • The scratch across John Fay’s ipad has grown to epic (and perhaps mythical) proportions.
  • I got my first haircut since…the conclusion of last Spring Training.
  • The blog did pretty well.

And finally…..

  • I realized that the 2010 Cincinnati Reds were pretty good, but the 2011 version is going to be even better. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

………………………………………………………………….

And so tomorrow I go home.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I miss Grace and Jean-Louise (“Scout“)…I’m really looking forward to seeing those little boogers.  Oh and 37 days without Skyline?!  Yikes!  Exercise and yoga are also calling…as is my bowling ball.

……………………………………………..

I’ve spent too long away from home
Did all the things I could have done
Gone are the days of endless thrills
I know I’m not the only one

So long, I’m goin’, goin’ home…

I have one more night in the desert.  Let’s make it count.

Edward Sharpe? Dan Auerbach? Blue Moon?

My hero.

I haven’t been to a spring training game this year (got any tickets?), but don’t they have skyline down the third base line? For us expats, it might be just as important as the team on the field.

Thanks for all the updates! By the way, you have the best job in the world…..wanna trade???

thanks for the recap. agreed. saying hohokam never gets old. some others we liked during our few days out there- camelback, bushmaster & wigwam. loved the spring training experience, definitely going back next year!
