MIGUEL CAIRO RETURNING TO REDS
Versatile Free Agent Agrees To 2-Year Contract
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – The Cincinnati Reds and free agent IF/OF Miguel Cairo have agreed to terms on a 2-year contract through the 2012 season. Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty made the announcement at Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel during the Winter Meetings.
In 90 appearances last season for the National League Central Division champion Reds, Cairo hit .290 while making 38 starts at 4 defensive positions (26gs at 3B, 9gs at 1B, 2gs at 2B, 1gs at RF).
One of baseball’s most versatile players, during his 15-year career Cairo has played first base (141g), second base (733g), third base (160g), shortstop (55g), left field (56g) and right field (14g). The playoff veteran has made 26 appearances covering 5 Division Series and 3 League Championship Series.
The last of the “PR Meetings” took place today at the MLB Winter Meetings here in Lake Buena Vista. Lots of good discussions as usual. I always find our meetings useful and interesting and will take much of the stuff I learned over the past three deays with me into the 2011 season.
Also today, the annual “Managers Luncheon” took place here at the Dolphin. It’s a social opportunity for each team’s beat writers to sit down and break bread with the manager they are scheduled to cover during the upcoming season. The teams’ media relations reps are also invited to join (and yes, I never turn down a free lunch).
Following lunch (we had chicken and pasta), the managers from each league get together and pose for a photograph. Take a look at the well-dressed NL skippers…
I had a great time last night at the Reds annual affiliate reception with the good people who work for the club’s minor league teams. I renewed acquaintances with the fine folks from the Louisville Bats, Carolina Mudcats, Dayton Dragons and Billings Mustangs. And this year, I was introduced to staff members from the Reds new affiliate, the Bakersfield Blaze.
The highlight of the evening was Reds Minor League Equipment Manager Jon Snyder’s white belt….
Keep those Burt BobbleRed photos coming!!

I’m returning to Cincinnati tomorrow. I can’t wait to get back to warm weather! It’s so cold here! And I just know the Queen City will welcome me back with sunny skies and mild temperatures…I just know it!
