BOR FIT CLUB: WEEK ONE
My journey to lose 35 pounds by February 1, 2011 starts now. Welcome to week one of the Better Off Red Fit Club!
For one of the first times ever, I actually got a head start on things over the weekend. I lifted weights, ran, played some hoops with my niece and nephew, became a lot more careful with what I ate and drank and took a nice long bike ride on the beautiful Loveland Bike Trail
My weigh-ins will take place every Sunday night beginning 10/24 and continuing until 1/30/11. As of Friday, I weigh 197 pounds – my all-time heaviest.
Thanks to your support, I do not anticipate losing my motivation. The process is going to be pretty tough, there’s no mistaking that, but I’m confident that’ll I’ll reach my goals of losing weight and living healthier.
In addition to the readers who submitted their awesome comments on the initial BOR Fit Club post, I’ve listed some more new members below. Maybe their stories will help motivate all of us…
-I’ve been working on getting fit for the last few years. I’ve had most of my success by running marathons… of course that is a ton of work and a ton of time to dedicate… and I know how you feel about the 26.2 sticker ;-) After my last race I decided to give the running legs a rest and go ahead and try the p90x program. I’m just about 2 weeks into and am loving it! I’m always sore, heh but I can definitely feel myself getting stronger. I can do better on the diet side of things… and when I was running I would equate the soda or doughnut or snack to how far I’d have to run to burn the same number of calories I was preparing to eat and a lot of times I found myself turning those things away.Good luck with your exercise.I’m 35 yrs old, 6’2″ and 198lbs. I’m hoping to firm up some areas and drop my weight to 180lbs. Ken Richey
– Charlie Oldfield wants to lose 30 pounds so he can fit into his 1969 Johnny Bench jersey again.
– Ryan Himes is looking to shed some pounds and get back into shape. He’s kick-starting his BOR Fit Club tenure with a pretty interesting cabbage soup diet.
– First, I am 6′ tall and 34 years old. 3 years ago, I was pushing 280 lbs on the scales. At that point I switched to diet soda and switched from McDonald’s and Arby’s to healthier food at Subway and packing my own lunches. Today, I weigh 230 lbs and feel much better. As far as activities, I golf and play softball from April thru October and I play in a basketball league the rest of the year. I also go to the local YMCA everyday on my lunch hour to swim, ride a bike, and/or hit the weight machines. My goal is to get down to 200 lbs, but I’ve been stuck at 230 for more than 6 months. That’s been very discouraging because I lost that first 50 lbs rapidly and with little effort. The last 30 I want to lose is obviously going to be more difficult. Hopefully your new Fit Club will help get me over the hump. Scott Graft
– Hi Jamie,
I’m a huge Reds fan who just kicked off a campaign to get healthy about 7 weeks ago. My brother is getting married in 2 1/2 weeks so my short term goal was to lose 20 lbs before his wedding but long term I’d like to lose 40-50lbs. I’ve lost 19.2 lbs so far! I’ve lost and gained before but this time I joined Weight Watchers and I really like it. There are meetings in Tower Place on Tues, Wed, or Thurs at 12:15 and I’ve been attending the Thursday meetings. I like the control that comes with tracking exactly what I eat and I like the formula to it, you have so many points a day and so many extra points a week and you get extra points for exercising and it’s pretty cut and dry and easy to follow. And, there are no forbidden foods, you can eat whatever you want as long as you account for it and stay within your points. I’ve found that for me, as long as I choose food that are high in fiber or in protein that I stay full longer. I’ve been trying to stay away from white carbs and when I eat carbs I look for whole grains. And I’ve been trying to drink lots of water. In addition to the dieting I’ve been trying to exercise more, too. I’m doing my best to get to the gym 3 days a week in the mornings before work and I’ve been walking downtown on my lunch breaks. On the weekends I try to walk or ride my bike. I also have a wii Fit game by EA Active that I use on days when I can’t make it to the gym, I like it pretty well.
– Hi Jamie, last year my wife developed an illness that forced her out of work and kept her from any kind of strenuous activity. needless to say she put on quite a few pounds; about 2 weeks ago her doctors told her she could start doing some light exercising(walking) just so happens that our little dog recently had surgery as well and the vet said to get her back in shape she should go on a diet and walk at least a block a day increasing as she gets better. Well the 2 of them started walking about a block a day(about 3/4 of a mile) they did this for 2 weeks they are now up to 2 blocks . My wife is also using the south beach diet and has lost 8 pounds so far.The dog has lost 2 pounds which is alot considering she is a chihuahua-mini-pin mix her ideal weight should be 10-12 pounds she currently weighs 17. I am very proud of them both, for the determination they have, and they have me walking with them on one of their walks when i get home from work, and I am feeling better too. I thought you would like this story,as an inspiration to use if you like.

Back in June I decided that I wanted to lose 50 pounds by Redsfest, as of yesterday I have dropped 65 pounds and counting!
It’s awesome that you are using your blog to encourage people to get healthy and I can’t wait to read about your journey and everyone else who decides to participate.
It would be cool if everyone who joins could do a group picture at Redsfest. I think that would be a great motivator and a pretty nice keepsake to document their accomplishment. Don’t know if it is possible but I know I would love to meet others who are following along.
Something that I have found to help with any sweet cravings I might have is frozen grapes and bananas. Blend them with some ice and a little milk and it’s the closest thing to a milkshake I have found but without the guilt. Throw in some low fat ice cream every now and then and it’s a downright party in a glass.

-I’m so in on this “Fit Club” thing. I had a similar moment of clarity to yours this past February when my sister got engaged and I realized that I was going to have to be in her wedding and wear the same dress as her size 2 friends and I didn’t want that, so I decided to change it. I didn’t want to “diet” because they never work and I always gain the weight back. Instead, I found out how many calories I needed to consume to lose weight but not starve myself and I started keeping track.
I didn’t deprive myself of anything. I just counted all of it. I hate working out so I knew I had to do the majority of the work by controlling what I ate. So that’s what I did.
I lost 25 lbs by her wedding which leaves me about 25 lbs away from my goal weight. The problem is this: the wedding has come and gone and I have no “deadline” to stick to…no big event coming up that I know will be documented with photographs.
So, I’ve decided to use your deadline. I’m going to lose my additional 25 lbs by February 1, 2011.
Good for you for being willing to put it out there in your blog like that. For me, accountability is the biggest motivationg factor, but also one of the hardest things to do.

Reds Season Sales Manager Chris Herrell happens to be someone I look up to when it comes to fitness. I asked him to provide a few tips to get us going here in week one. Here’s what he came up with…
? Walk, run, skip, whatever…..make sure you are doing some type of cardio 3 days of week
? Eat 6 little meals instead of 3 big meals (your body needs to be feed throughout the day and not all at one time)
? Be consistent. Don’t work out for a couple of days and take a week off. Put together a schedule of the workouts you want to do (weight training, cardio, etc) and stick to it.
