REDS RIGHT FIELDER JAY BRUCE NAMED BANK OF AMERICA PRESENTS THE NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Cincinnati Reds right fielder Jay Bruce, whose dramatic walk-off homer last Tuesday clinched the franchise’s first postseason berth in 15 years, has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the period of September 27- October 3, 2010. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America’s long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

In six games last week, Bruce ranked second in the N.L. with a .444 (8-18) average and four home runs. His 1.111 slugging percentage was tops among National Leaguers, while his 20 total bases were good for fourth and his .500 on-base percentage tied for fourth. The lefty slugger added five RBI and five runs scored to his weekly totals. On September 28th against Houston at Great American Ball Park, Bruce’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Reds to a 3-2 win, clinching the National League Central Division title and the club’s first postseason appearance since 1995. On September 30th, in the rubber match of the three-game set with Houston, the 23-year-old went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, leading the Reds to a 9-1 victory. Bruce went 2-for-3 and homered twice in a 7-4 win over Milwaukee on Saturday, October 2nd, marking his fifth multi-home run performance of the season. The Texas native went deep again on Sunday, giving him a career-best 25 home runs on the season. Bruce, who is in his third Major League season, set career-highs in nearly every other offensive category this year, batting .281 with 70 RBI, 80 runs scored and collecting 143 hits in 148 games.

Other nominees last week included Bruce’s teammate Drew Stubbs (.400, .526 OBP, 4 R, 4 SB); Pittsburgh rookie Pedro Alvarez (.440, 3 HR, 8 RBI, .840 SLG), who was last week’s winner, and Ronny Cedeo (.400, 10 H, .720 SLG); Milwaukee’s Lorenzo Cain (.429, 12 H, 6 RBI, SB); Colorado’s Dexter Fowler (.400, 2 HR, 2 3B, SB); Matt Kemp (.273, 5 HR, 12 RBI, .955 SLG) and Ted Lilly (2-0, 1.20, 17 SO, 15.0 IP) of the Dodgers; Matt Pagnozzi (.474, HR, 6 RBI) of the Cardinals; Florida’s Mike Stanton (.429, HR, 7 RBI, 12 H); Houston’s Nelson Figueroa (2-0, 0.00, 13 SO, 12.2 IP); Atlanta’s Tommy Hanson (0-0, 0.71, 9 SO, 12.2 IP); Carlos Marmol (0.00, 4 SV, 7 SO, 4.0 IP) and Carlos Zambrano (2-0, 1.35, 10 SO, 13.1 IP) of the Cubs; and San Francisco hurlers Jonathan Sanchez (2-0, 1.64, 11 SO, 11.0 IP) and Brian Wilson (0.00, 3 SV, 4 SO, 3.2 IP), who helped the Giants clinch the N.L.
