REDS #1 FAN

IMG_1133.JPGowres.JPGChuck D
is at the gates of Great American Ball Park dressed in his trademark “#1 Fan” gear, pounding his batting gloved-hands together and cheering for the Reds as if they were smack-dab in the middle of an October playoff game.  Only, it’s 7 o’clock on a Saturday morning in August and the team is nowhere to be found.  Dusty and the boys are in Chicago sleeping off another Wrigley Field victory while Chuck and hundreds of fellow Reds season-ticket holders gather at GABP for a fan appreciation event.

If you don’t already know Chuck D, you might recognize him as the between-innings superstar of the GABP videoboard, loitering under the Power Stacks during most Reds games rooting on the Cincinnati Nine with air-drum solos, pom-pom hats, C-logoed pajama pants and the booming voice of a carnival barker.  He’s fairly easy to find no matter where you sit in the seating bowl – just look and/or listen for him.

Through the kindness of his friends Amy and Andy Perry (whom he met at GABP), Chuck is an official Reds season ticket holder.  He attends nearly every game and every Reds-related event at the ballpark and fashions himself as the club’s #1 Fan.  He dresses the part and his loyalty never wavers.  But what’s more interesting is the supernatural energy of positivity that he brings with him to Joe Nuxhall Way.

“I believe you can make things happen and set things into motion with positive energy,” says Chuck.  “There is spiritual energy that you don’t see.  If you bring that positive energy (to the ballpark), there’s an energy exchange.  If enough people get together with that energy, you can set things into motion.  We know there is a spiritual side of life that we don’t always see.  I believe in energy.”

IMG_2235.JPGChuck D is the alter-ego of Charles Dorn Jr.: musician, landscaper, handy man, Reds fan.  “I’m kind of like Jimmy Page during the Yardbirds transition,” says Chuck.

Your first impression of Chuck D might be a little off-putting.   You might think he’s just a “crazy loud guy” whom you hope isn’t sitting in your section.  But although he has an unusual amount of vigor and team spirit, you’d be wrong to turn your nose up at him.  He’s a good man, a man of the people who appreciates the innate goodness of human beings, and a guy with an undying love for the Cincinnati Reds…and the cosmos.

Chuck has hit some tough times over the past couple of years, dealing with some personal stuff as well as an injury that not only required surgery but also compromised his livelihood.  It’s no match, though for his spirit and positive attitude.  “You’re not going to win every game, and there’s going be problems and you’re going to fall short sometimes but if you stay positive and always try to find the good things, your whole outlook on life is going to be better,” suggests Chuck.

Who knows, maybe Chuck is indeed the paranormal pilot of this season’s magical mystery tour.  “Maybe I have some magic powers,” he wonders.  “Some people have joked that I’m a wizard – but no, I just believe in energy and really backing your team.  This is a great group of guys and a great team.  And I don’t believe getting down on them.”

Chuck D is awesome for the Reds and the game! I really enjoy him at the games! We started noticing him at games and enjoying it. The players notice too. BP and the Bullpen especially.

Jamie very nice piece on Chuck. I get so upset when people stick there nose up and look at him like he has 4 heads. He is such a nice guy. I remember being told its what is in the inside that counts. He will greet fans, (even the cardinal fans) welcome to the game, enjoy the game, and tells people after the game, thanks for coming, get home safe. When we went to Cleveland, he walked around downtown Cleveland telling people welcome to the ‘land, in his Cincinnati gear. He was dressed and ready to go at 9am, we got many looks on the freeway, as we stopped for lunch in Columbus to meet my sister and stopping for gas. What a great time it was. Now if I could hit the lottery I would be planning a St. Louis trip.

Great piece on the man who is most definitely the Cincinnati Reds’ #1 fan. Chuck, Amy and Andy are great people and great fans. I am proud to say I have gotten to know them better since the Winter Caravan. Chuck is not only a “superfan”, but very knowledgeable about baseball and people in general. He may very well be the biggest and best “superfan” in all of sports. He is positive to everyone, even Cubs fans… ;)

GO CHUCK D!!!! STRIKE EM’ OUUUUUUUTTTTTT!!!!!!

Jamie…you describe Chuck D exactly…at first…I didn’t like him..thought he was a bit odd…but then we got to know him and he’s a super nice Reds fan! He’s ALWAY positive for the Reds…no matter the score, no matter the time of year! You are so right…you can hear him anywhere in the bowl…we’ve heard him yelling Go! Go!..way up in the upper bowl! He’s always a positive example for what can happen….Now if the team would just run w/the positive energy…it could be amazing at what could happen. How about seeing Chuck D on the big screen at the World Series??? Amy and Andy are great too! Together they are the Red’s Triad! Everyone should stop over and see them under the smoke stacks…you’ll be glad you did!

All these kinds words for me and andy also. Thank you all. Wish I knew you by your email addresses. I think I have Russell & Harry. but the last comment has me baffled. Thank you so much :)

Amy, the last comment was from my wife, Beth. This story really shows the bond between all three of you… It brought a smile to my face at work to see the picture and story about Chuck, you and Andy. Jamie did a really great job.

Best Wishes,

Harry in Columbus

Love Chuck! He’s one of the coolest guys I’ve gotten to know from my numerous trips down to GABP. He really is a great person. I feel lucky to have him, Amy and Andy in my circle of friends. =)

Splendid, heartwarming story, Jamie! Who says there is no “Church of Baseball”!
