LEHIGH VALLEY (PHILLIES) 4, LOUISVILLE 5: RHP Sam LeCure (6-2) started for Louisville and fanned 13 batters over 7.0 innings (4h, 2r/2er, 0bb)…RHP Carlos Fisher picked up his 4th save (1ip, 1k)…the Bats scored 5 runs on 8 hits…SS Zack Cozart went 3-for-4 with a home run (#13), a double, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored…2b Chris Valaika added a pair of hits, including a double and an RBI.
CHATTANOOGA (DODGERS) 2, CAROLINA 5: RHP Daryl Thompson started for Carolina and gave up an unearned run on 2 hits in 3.1 innings (0bb, 5k)…he left the game due to water intoxication (Google it, it’s real) …LHP Lee Tabor (3-0) relieved Thompson and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings (3h, 2k)…RHP Jerry Gil collected his 5th save (1.1ip, 1h, 2bb, 2k)…the Mudcats scored 5 runs on 8 hits…LF Felix Perez went 2-for-4 with a 2-run homer (#1)…RF Sean Henry had 2 hits and 2 RBI.
LYNCHBURG HILLCATS: The Hillcats were off yesterday celebrating National Ice Cream Day…to commemorate the big day, Lynchburg manager Pat Kelly took the entire team, including the relief pitchers out to Mountain Frost Creamery to indulge in milkshakes, banana splits and other frosty delights…things went awry, though when SS Brodie Greene didn’t realize he was allergic to hot fudge…C Chris McMurray complained of a belly-ache and a migraine ice cream headache…it was only when LHP Donnie Joseph’s “ChocoTaco” melted all over his new white pants did Kelly decide to cancel the celebration.
DAYTON 6, BURLINGTON (ROYALS) 2: The Dragons snapped a 7-game losing skid…RHP Jacob Johnson (5-6) started for Dayton and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 6.1 innings (2bb, 7k)…LHP Ezequiel Infante pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief (1h, 1bb)…the Dragons scored 6 runs on 6 hits…DH Alex Oliveras (2rbi) and SS Didi Gregorius (2r) paced the offense with 2 hits apiece…RF Ryan LaMarre (sounds like LaMar) belted a 2-run homer that landed on the roof of Wallace Carothers’ childhood home (Carothers of course was the inventor of nylon).
BILLINGS 5, CASPER (ROCKIES) 7: RHP Daniel Tuttle (3-2) started for Billings and was reached for 7 runs (6er) on 10 hits in 4.0 innings…RHP Tyler Cline was better in relief, pitching 4.0 scoreless innings (2h, 1bb, 4k)…the Mustangs scored 5 runs on 10 hits…1b Donald Lutz went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
AZL CUBS 3, AZL REDS 9: Vicky Clarke’s baby boy, LHP Mitchell Clarke (1-0) turned in a sterling performance, scattering 5 hits over 5.0 shutout innings (0bb, 4k)…the Redlegs plated 9 runs on a ******** 15 hits…3b David Vidal gored 3 hits, scored 2 runs and poured 2 RBI…1b Robert Maddox went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored…LF Stephen Hunt had 2 hits and 3 RBI (2r).
MINOR LEAGUE NEWS
Congratulations to Lynchburg’s James Avery for being named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for July 12-18…Avery on Friday pitched 8.0 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits with no walks and 6 strikeouts in the Hillcats’ 4-0 win over Myrtle Beach.
In 31 games since 6/23, Louisville shortstop Zack Cozart is batting .320 (39-for-122) with 5 HR, 19 RBI, 23 R, .385 OBP and a .525 slugging pct…Cozart ranks among International League leaders in at-bats (1st, 373), runs (1st, 64), games (T1st, 94), hits (3rd, 98) and total bases (3rd, 165)…it should also be noted that he was a 2010 member of the Reds Winter Caravan’s North Tour (aka, the Rock Star Tour).
