REDS WIN! SPLIT THE 4-GAME SERIES WITH THE GIANTS

IMG_3193.JPG

The Reds rallied from a 4-run deficit in the 3rd inning and a 2-run deficit in the bottom of the 8th to beat the Giants this afternoon, 7-6.  With today’s victory, Cincinnati leads the Majors with 21 come-from-behind wins and 12 wins in its last at-bat.

Brandon Phillips continues to swing a white-hot bat as he went 4-for-5 with a triple, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.  He’s now hit safely in a season-high 13 straight games to raise his batting average to .301 and his on-base percentage to .361.

Jonny Gomes and Jay Bruce both had 2 hits and an RBI. Joey Votto drove in 2.

Mike Leake started on the mound and despite not having his best stuff, still battled and kept the Reds in the game over his 4.1 innings (11h, 5r, 4bb, 2k).  Arthur Rhodes “did what Arthur Rhodes does and got people out.”  He earned the victory in relief by pitching a season-high 1.2 perfect innings.  Sir Arthur’s ERA is now at an itsy-bitsy, teeney-weeney 0.33.  He hasn’t allowed a run over his last 25 consecutive innings pitched.

Francisco Cordero retired the side in order in the 9th for his 17th save.

The win secures a 4-games series split with the Giants.

Bronson Arroyo will oppose Luke Hochevar tomorrow night at 7:10pm ET as the Kansas City Royals come to town to take on the Redlegs in a 3-game weekend series.

QUOTE BOAT

“It wasnt’ that Leake was pitching poorly, it was just they were finding every hole and flaring balls.  He fought and fought.” – Dusty

I”m doing a lot of hoping and praying and finger-crossing and stuff like that.  I just hope everybody keeps believing – including the fans and everybody out there.  When everybody believes, from the front office to the administrative assistants to the ground crew to everybody and just thinks positive, good things will happen.” – Dusty

“I think the thing that was different about this game was that their coaches had a pretty good plan for me.  They punched me right off the bat and I couldn’t react fast enough to it.” – Leake

“Sometimes games are going to be like that.  They didn’t square every ball up but I did make more mistakes than I wanted to.” – Leake

“That’s what we play for everyday is to get a win.  I’m just glad we came back.  You can’t give up on us.  We’re a pretty good team.” – Leake

“They were kind of like UCLA to me.  I gave up 11 runs to UCLA one time and they didn’t even hit the ball hard a lot.  It’s just one of those games.” – Leake

“I tell ya what it’s all about is believing in ourselves.  We did that (today).  The pitching staff did its job and we just believe.  We just learn from our mistakes and keep rollin’.  This was a great game and we really needed it.” – Phillips

“I just tried to go up there and have good at-bats, see some pitches and be the lead-off guy.” – Phillips who batted first today

“Right now, I’m just trying to get on base for the big guys – Joey Votto and Scott Rolen.  I’m not hitting fourth anymore, so I had to change my (mental approach) and get on base more instead of trying to drive guys in.  And that’s fun.  It’s a lot of fun.” – Phillips

“When you’re winning, you become a different player and that’s what Scott Rolen has been talking about.  When you start winning, you’re going to see what type of player you really are.  And hey, it’s a lot of fun.” – Phillips
