TURN IT UP!
So in my continued quest to make “I’ve Got a Feeling” by the Beatles the 2010 Reds theme song, I listened to it at full-blast at least 4 times on my way to work this morning. The master plan is to convince Reds Media Production Manager Dave Storm to blare it in GABP following Reds wins (and don’t worry, Dave, I think John Lennon is singing “Reds dream” in that one part)
…Anyway, here are some quotes from today’s Reds newsclips that I find encouraging:
“Winning big games like this late hadn’t happened for us a whole lot since I’ve been on this team. It’s definitely refreshing. It’s the kind of stuff that if you look back five months from now, those are the huge wins that can change the standings for us.” – Bronson Arroyo (MLB.com)
“I think it’s a good sign. To be completely honest with you, if I’m not mistaken, last year we had a lot of losses that same way. To flip it — I don’t mean to be premature with my comment — I think it’s a pretty good sign that we’re winning these ones, especially on the road.” – Joey Votto (MLB.com)
“Winning the close games like we are, that’s big. You see all the great teams, that’s what they do. I know we’re having a lot of fun right now. We just have to keep it up.” - Micah Owings (MLB.com)
“We keep fighting.” – Owings (Cincinnati Enquirer)
“It feels good to win. Everybody’s tired. But those boys are busting it – every play, every at-bat.” - Dusty Baker (Cincinnati Enquirer)
“We’re the type of team that’s not going to give up. We have a lot of guys who push each other through ups and downs, that’s the name of the game. Right now we’re just trying to go out there and get wins however and it doesn’t matter, as long as we win the game.” – Brandon Phillips (Fox Sports Ohio)
See a theme here? This team believes in itself and isn’t giving up in games in which they’ve lost or blown leads. Joey and Bronson both kind of hinted above that if last night’s game was played in ’09, the Reds would’ve probably lost.
Personally, I see a big difference in this season’s team compared to last year. It feels like the club is playing with a different type of energy. I like it. I also like the “fight” in this team. Let’s hope they keep it up.
Aaron Miles cleared waivers today and has been released…Wladimir Balentien also cleared waivers today and has been outrighted to Class AAA Louisville…both players were designated for assignment on Opening Day.
Well, well, well…Pennsylvania is alive with Reds fever! I received a couple more emails from the Keystone State answering the Reds State Challenge….
Kevin writes, “I’m from Norristown about 15 miles outside of Philly. I’ve been a Reds fan since 1967. GO REDS!”
Bravo, Kevin! Good work and thanks for answering the State Challenge!
Justin writes, “ Here’s a picture of me with Eric Seidman (of Baseball Prospectus) at the BPro event at PNC Park last fall. I was the only Reds fan in attendance, and had the audacity to wear that hat when meeting and greeting with Pirates GM Neil Huntington.”
Good work, Justin. You just made Reds fans in Pennsylvania very proud.
If you’re a Reds fan from Pennsylvania, I want you to prove it! Email me (email@example.com) photographic proof that you’re a Reds fan from the Commonwealth. I’ll be accepting emails from Pennsylvania through Sunday night.
On Monday, a new state will have its turn to show off its Reds allegiance.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Reds fans of all ages…please welcome the newest member of the Reds Cap Club, Hannah Gaff of Virginia Beach, VA!
Hannah’s dad, Marty writes: “When last we spoke I wrote you from Japan with a picture of me from the Tokyo dome. When I told my wife what I had done she was of course excited but then I was immediately asked why I did not include a picture of our daughter Hannah. So I am writing you with a Picture of the beautiful Hannah she is 2 years old and of course has been wearing Reds hats since she could hold her head up. This hat has become her favorite recently and she refuses to go ANYWHERE without it. I am looking forward to Virginia being called out on state challenge so I can send yet another picture. Thanks. “
Be sure to tune in or log onto XL 950 AM in Indianapolis this afternoon at 4:05pm EST. I’ll be appearing in The Zone with host Derek Schultz.
I’ll be rejoining my bowling team tonight, just in time for the league’s last week of the season. I’m not sure if I even remember how to bowl. I’m willing to bet I’ll hurt myself somehow…
I received some very nice emails/messages from some folks the past couple of days. Thank you so much for the kind words and for reading Better Off Red.
That’s all for now…enjoy the game tonight!
I’ll be back tomorrow with some stuff, including the Farm Report.
